American slasher films are a dime a dozen. Everyone knows "Friday the 13th," "Halloween," "Scream," "My Bloody Valentine," "Prom Night," and the countless others that have been made over the past three decades or so. The UK is now adding their spin to the genre with "Demons Never Die."
"Demons Never Die" is being touted as a "Scream"-inspired film and is produced by "Thor" actor Idris Elba. The movie revolves around a group of depressed London teenagers whose friend commits suicide. They decide to form a suicide pact and do the same. Unfortunately, a masked killer shows up and starts to do the job for them. One of the teens, Archie, has decided he wants to live and now has to protect his girlfriend and himself from an unidentified killer.
The suicide pact is a unique plot device for the slasher genre. That at least adds a new spin to an old concept. After over thirty years of these types of films, there has to be more than just teens being killed over and over again. It will prove interesting to see if the plot device truly will help set the movie apart from others in the genre.
Another important element to a good slasher film is if the killer is a mystery. The killer absolutely HAS to be unknown. "Scream" and the first "Friday the 13th" is a good example of this. The remake of "Prom Night" is a perfect example of a slasher that fails to have any sort of suspense or mystery. You know who the killer is from the very beginning.
"Demons Never Die" is the directorial debut of Arjun Rose. Rose also wrote the screenplay for the film. The movie stars Ashley Walters, Robert Sheehan ("Season of the Witch," "The Red Riding" trilogy), Tulisa Contostavlos, Jason Maza, Shanika Warren-Markland and Femi Oneyiran. The movie hits theaters in the UK on October 28, 2011. There's no word as to when we'll see it in the U.S. You can check out the trailer for the movie right here and visit the Facebook page here.
