Ukrainian Village Still an Old World Influence in Chicago
Neighborhood: Bucktown
Chicago, IL 60612
United States of America
The many areas surrounding Ukrainian Village have become gentrified white-collar enclaves. However, Ukrainian Village continues to maintain its rich ethnic culture while hosting one of Chicago's largest Ukrainian communities. Just blocks away from trendy Bucktown and South of Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village offers a taste of Eastern European culture not easily found elsewhere.

An important part of any culture is its music, folk art and traditions. The Ukrainian National Museum offers a collection of 1,140 Ukrainian artifacts and houses an extensive national Ukrainian immigrant document and photo archive that includes memorabilia from 1933 Chicago World's Fair. Make sure to contact the museum before visiting because they often host special entertainment events and exhibits featuring Ukrainian artists.

Religion is another important part of Ukrainian culture and art lovers will enjoy viewing the distinctive and ornate churches within Ukrainian Village's boarders. Enjoy the history and religious art found in such churches as Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral, which is an official Chicago Landmark designed by the famous architect Louis Sullivan.

Consider a visit to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic, which has been a village fixture for over 100 years or marvel at the majestic onion domes of Saint George Cathedral. Each church welcomes visitors to enjoy all they offer have to offer. Call the church before visiting to find out if they are having any charity events. Lucky visitors may get a chance to sample homemade Ukrainian cooking and traditional entertainment at one of their charity events.

Foodies will love another important aspect of Ukrainian culture -- food. Round off a wonderful day exploring Ukrainian culture in Chicago by experiencing the flavors of Ukrainian food.

Unfortunately, the Ukrainian Village fixture called Sak's Ukrainian Village Restaurant is no longer in business, but Old Lviv located at 2228 West Chicago Avenue has taken its place and offers a traditional Ukrainian/Russian buffet menu that has been described by some restaurant goers as food "my grandma used to make."
