Ulcerative Colitis, Marriage & Romance: Yes, You Can Have All Three!

Keeping the romance alive when you have ulcerative colitis is no easy feat. I have figured out some ways to keep the romance alive with my husband.

An understanding partner is the first thing that helps to keep the romance alive. I never try to hide things or symptoms from my husband. He is a truly great man who understands when I am having a flare-up.

One important point that I want to make now is that keeping the romance alive does not necessarily mean that you have to have sex. Romance is an atmosphere that you can create with your spouse even if you have no intention of being intimate.

My husband and I keep the romance in our marriage during a flare-up by just enjoying the time that we have together. We snuggle up on the sofa and watch a good movie. It is the close contact and relaxation that we find romantic. By staying home, I can stay comfortable during an ulcerative colitis flare-up because I don't have to worry about getting stuck without a bathroom.

Sometimes, we will order dinner in or he will go to one of our favorite restaurants to pick up food. I am lucky because he can surprise me with dinner even during a flare-up because he knows what trigger foods I need to avoid during an ulcerative colitis flare-up. When we have our food, we will light some tall candles, turn off the lights and turn on some slow music to sex a romantic atmosphere.

If we do go out to enjoy a romantic dinner during one of my flare-ups, he always finds a subtle way to get us a table very close to the bathroom. It is the little things that keep the romance alive between us.

My husband and I use my flare-ups as a time to talk and think about the past fun times that we have had. We play board games or card games.

During a flare-up, I usually don't feel like having intercourse. He is very understanding about this. He doesn't mind simply cuddling in bed. Sometimes, I will light candles in the bedroom and treat him to a massage. He is even understanding when I have to stop in the middle of the massage to run to the bathroom.

Keeping the romance alive when you have ulcerative colitis means that you have to be creative in finding ways to connect with your partner that work for you.
