Ulcerative Colitis Patients Find Support Through Patient Education Programs

Wendy Dawn
Over the past two to five years awareness of ulcerative colitis has grown, but there is still a large majority of the public who have never heard of the disease. In recent years, patients were subject to the information they could extract from their doctor, or the scant information they could find on the web.

While information is more readily available on the web, web information cannot always be trusted.

The most effective way for an ulcerative colitis patient to learn more about their disease, how to cope with the disease, and connect with others who experience the same ulcerative colitis challenges they do is to attend a patient information program.

There are several organizations that offer patient education programs for ulcerative colitis patients. The best thing a patient can do is hook up with a local program that will help keep them informed of ulcerative colitis patient education programs.

You may be surprised to find that many local hospitals offer ulcerative colitis patient education programs. Check with your local hospital to find out what patient education programs they offer. If your local hospital does not offer an ulcerative colitis patient education program talk with your gastroenterologist or hospital public relations department about starting one.

The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America has monthly meetings throughout the U.S. Visit the CCFA website to find a chapter near you. Meetings are attended by ulcerative colitis sufferers, care givers, doctors, and other volunteers. Meetings are both educational and supportive in nature.

Throughout the year CCFA assists in coordinating specific patient education programs.

The American Gastroenterological Association offers online support and education for ulcerative colitis patients. The AGA offers several programs and even online courses for learning more about ulcerative colitis.

On the Road Again: A Forum for UC Learning is an educational program for ulcerative colitis patients. Working with experts from doctors to nutritionists, On the Road Again offers a supportive, interactive environment for ulcerative colitis sufferers, friends, families, and care givers.

Be careful of programs that are not associated with the medical or pharmaceutical community that promise a "cure" for ulcerative colitis. Be cautious of their educational information or any events sponsored by groups promising a "miracle cure." They may offer erroneous, harmful, or even life threatening information.
