Ulcerative Colitis Stigmas: Being Lazy, Nasty, Childish and Anti-Social - Overcome Them All!

Casey L. Holley
Ulcerative colitis is a condition that causes frequent bloody diarrhea. This diarrhea causes a person suffering from Ulcerative colitis have to have to make frequent, very urgent trips to the bathrooms.

Because of these facts, the most common stigma that I have noticed about Ulcerative colitis is that some people think you are childish and nasty. When you suffer from Ulcerative colitis, accidents happen. Some people do not understand that as an Ulcerative colitis sufferer, you have no control over the emergency. Sometimes, you will soil yourself regardless of how hard you try to hold it until you can find a bathroom.

For anyone who does not have Ulcerative colitis or another gastrointestinal disease that causes strong urges to defecate, it seems unreal that a grown adult is unable to hold their bowels until they can find a bathroom.

I guess this stigma has to do with a lack of understanding about this medical condition. Some people just do not understand that Ulcerative colitis is an actual medical condition. I am sure some people think Ulcerative colitis is just an excuse to use the bathroom anywhere.

Trust me, if I had it my way, I would always be able to hold it until I could get to a bathroom. This is more possible for me now than it ever was, but I can remember times where I was embarrassed by an accident. This was especially true many years ago when I first found out I had the disease.

Another stigma I have noticed is people think a person who is home bound because of Ulcerative colitis is lazy and a hermit. This is far from the truth. The frequent and urgent need to use the bathroom makes it almost impossible to work if your Ulcerative colitis is not in remission.

I am sure most people who think having to stop working because of Ulcerative colitis is just being lazy have, at some point in life, had to call in sick at work or school because of diarrhea. Now, if that is you, multiply the way you felt when you were sick times 100. That is still easier than dealing with Ulcerative colitis.

I guess what I am trying to say is anyone who does not have Ulcerative colitis should learn about the condition before they make snap judgments about people who have Ulcerative colitis. Trust me, every Ulcerative colitis sufferer would like to be cured of the disease and live a normal life.

For Ulcerative colitis sufferers who have to cope with these stigmas, remember that ignorance is probably the cause. All you can do is try to educate the ignorant.
