Ulcerative Colitis Sufferers: Is the RV the Best Way to Travel?

Genevieve Adams
If you have ulcerative colitis, it can limit your life in many ways. Your diet is restricted, you are constantly conscious of where your medication is, and it is best to have a restroom nearby at all times. With conditions like these placed on your life, it can be hard to enjoy traveling. However, I have found that traveling in an RV can allow you to focus more on the experience of travel and spending time with those you love, and less on your ulcerative colitis.

Spending your travel time in an RV allows total and complete control of what you are eating. Rather than relying on mini-markets, fast food restaurants and the occasional sit-down dinner while on the road, you can stock your RV cabinets and refrigerator with food you know won't cause you to be uncomfortable. And, better than simply sticking some non-perishables in the back of your car and hoping for the best, in the mini-kitchen of an RV you have the tools to prepare food while traveling in such a way as to suit with your ulcerative colitis needs.

Another great benefit to ulcerative colitis sufferers of traveling in an RV is that you can take a mini version of your house with you. You have room for extra clothes, extra toiletries, and plenty of room for your medication. With the opportunities afforded you by the room in an RV, you don't have to worry about trying not to overpack. Bring everything you need and then some, and you will never be left in a lurch.

One of the best reasons for RV travel, however, is the constant proximity to a private restroom. If you suffer from ulcerative colitis, expansive stretches of open freeway are not your friend. I have been in a situation while traveling where due to being in between cities, the only restroom available to me in my urgent UC situation was a filthy gas station bathroom. Aside from feeling rather exposed, I felt like taking a shower after leaving. What I wouldn't have given to be able to simply pull over and use my own private on-board restroom. Also, if visiting friends or relatives, an RV can provide you with your own restroom outside the house to help you avoid an awkward or embarrassing situation.

RVs can be expensive and a bit inconvenient to park and maneuver. However, given the specific travel benefits to UC patients, I think that an RV is by far the smartest, most enjoyable way to travel with UC.
