Ulcerative Colitis and Upper Stomach Pain

Upper Stomach Pain Can Be a Consistent Side Effect of Ulcerative Colitis

Gary Davis
I experience upper stomach pain often because I have ulcerative colitis. My doctor has given me a few reasons why upper stomach pain occurs with ulcerative colitis.

It is difficult to grasp the amazing ability of the human body to react to stress. In 1978 I was very upset over my wife's medical condition and created a "tertiary corkscrew esophagus". The symptoms were those of a heart attack but what actually happened was that my esophagus twisted three times. That is the power of the human body to react to the mind.

So it is with upper stomach pain and ulcerative colitis.

As I have mentioned in other articles associated with ulcerative colitis, gas formation is a common side effect of this condition. Upper stomach pain reacts to gas. "Trapped gas" may be pressured by a rib or minimized opening and may cause upper stomach pain.

With ulcerative colitis, upper stomach pain can occur when the irritation from the ulcerative colitis causes the sufferer to hold themselves tense.

Ulcerative colitis is an illness associated with the gastrointestinal system. The stomach can get irritated and inflamed.

Worry over ulcerative colitis as well as the constant symptoms which may result from the effects of foods on the colon can create acid which irritates the stomach and creates upper stomach pain.

Inflammation of the esophageal lining can contribute to a condition known as esophageal reflux which also can create acid and bring forward digestive juices to the upper stomach and throat, returning them in such a way as to cause upper stomach burning and pain.

One might go so far as to say that upper stomach pain is going to be a regular symptom of ulcerative colitis. The way to minimize it, as I have been taught by my doctor, orbits around several preventative measures.

Exercise keeps the body operating as well as any particular person can operate. Water creates a balance for other fluids that can burn and irritate. Further, water aids in the function of the bowel.

Support groups are good in that they help reduce stress and can help people gain knowledge by learning what others do for preventative maintenance to prevent upper stomach pain.

Finally, what has been a big help to me is the regular use of an antacid such as Mylanta. The coating minimizes irritation and aids in the prevention of upper stomach pain as well as the control of ulcerative colitis

I often have upper stomach pain. It takes my very best efforts and constant vigilance to prevent it.
