Ultimate College Guide: Effective Study Habits for College Students

Heide Lynne Canlas
Effective study habits form the backbone of good academic performance. College students must be able to study effectively in order to maximize their learning and perform better in school. With the added factor of living a semi-independent existence, there is the additional aspect of studying without parental supervision. Hence, the need to acquire the skill of studying becomes an individual burden.

Fortunately, acquiring good study habits are quite easy and manageable for the college student. Here are some things a college student can do in order to improve his or her study habits:

1. Set aside time for studying. It is a common misconception that you need to study for hours on end in order to improve academic performance. In fact, even for as short as thirty minutes a day, you could achieve a marked improvement on your grades. Hence, try setting a particular time every day for studying, like 30 minutes after dinner or after watching your daily dose of TV. But make sure to always abide by this schedule to attain maximum output.

2. Maximize your study time. If you have decided to study at a particular time, just study. Do not distract yourself by watching TV, playing computer games, or by bumming around. It is better to study for thirty minutes straight, than to study for three hours distracted.

3. Associate a particular place for studying alone. Because mental associations play a big role in behavior, study in a place that is conducive for concentration. It is best to invest in a well-lit study desk. Do not try studying at the bed or at the sofa in front of the television, as this would only increase the chance for you to be distracted.

4. Organize. Try to have your materials at hand when you are studying. Finding materials at different places only waste time and cause distraction. Doesn't it feel nice to study when all you need is alright right in front of you?

5. Reward yourself. All work and no play can make you dull and sometimes discouraged. Don't just study for hours on end. In the end, that would only prove frustrating and detrimental to your study effort. Try to have breaks and reward yourself between breaks.

At the end of the day, the most important thing about being in college is to study well and maximize your potentials by involving yourself in varied fields of endeavor (like extra-curricular activities). Study well and have fun!
