With the moderate weather and natural beauty, Kauai is the perfect place for a camping trip. It is also a very inexpensive way to enjoy the island. Kauai has several campsites to choose from, at both county and state parks. I recommend getting your permit before you leave for your trip to Kauai to ensure you have a place to stay. The following is a guide to camping on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai.

The Na Pali Coast State Park is a one of the most beautiful sights on all of Kauai. It is home to breathtaking natural beauty and historic remnants of Hawaii's past. It is also one of the most popular campsites in all of Hawaii and space is limited. I recommend getting your permit early. A permit is only $10. Camping is allowed at Hanakoa and Kalalau Valley only. Camping at Na Pali Coast State Park is real camping. You bring everything in and everything out. There are no restrooms or drinking water. This is for the campers that like to rough it.

Koke's State Park is located fifteen miles north of Kekaha on Koke's Road. The park is at 3600 feet above sea level and adjoins Waimea Canyon State Park. Koke's State Park has tent camping and lodging, including cabins and dormitory style accommodations. Lodging fees range in price from $20 to $55. The lodge also features a cocktail lounge and a restaurant. Amenities include restrooms, picnic areas, and outdoor showers. Permits are required for camping and campsites fees are $5.

Polihale State Park on the west shore allows picnicking and camping along the coastline. It was recently flooded and is now under repair with plans to reopen on April 27, 2010. The state park offers fantastic sunsets and beautiful views of the Na Pali coast. Amenities include restrooms, picnic shelters, outdoor showers and drinking water. Camping permits are required and are $5.

For all Kauai state park camping information you can contact Hawaii State Parks at (808) 587-0300.

All seven county parks offer camping, although some are limited allowing camping only on weekends and holidays. Camping permits for county parks are $3 for non-residents. Hawaii residents and children can camp for free, but permits are still required. Salt Pond Park on the southwest side of Kauai is great for camping and recreation. The waters are calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Salt Pond Park Amenities include restrooms, cold showers, and picnic areas. Anini Beach Park on the north shore is another great county park for camping. This park has a protected reef that is perfect for snorkeling. Anini Beach Park Amenities also include restrooms, cold showers and picnic areas. For more information on Kauai County Parks and camping call (808) 241-4463.

Camping on Kauai is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty this Hawaiian Island has to offer. Each park is unique and sure to meet any camper's needs.
