One of the best things about camping on Maui is the price. Who needs a four-star resort when you can sleep under the stars, listening to the Pacific, on one of the earth's most beautiful islands. And what better time to test out your camping skills than in this down economy? Flights to Maui from the mainland can be found at a reasonable price these days, and without that large hotel bill, it is easier than ever to afford a dream vacation on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
Near the Kahului Airport, you will find a county campground at Kanaha Beach Park. This county campground offers water and showers and restrooms. Permits are required but cost only $3 per person. For further information on this county campground call 808-270-7389.
If you would prefer to stay at a state campground, you can head over to Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach on Maui. There are a dozen bare-bones cabins located here that can be had for just over fifty bucks. There is a five-night maximum stay. Otherwise, permits cost only $5 per night for the entire party. You can also choose to stay high on the mountain at Polipoli Park. There is only one cabin here, so be sure to call well in advance if that is your preference. Information is available by calling State Parks at 808-984-8109.
Perhaps the best camping on Maui can be found at Haleakala National Park. Here the cabins are much more user-friendly, but they are also more difficult to get. Up to a dozen people can stay in one cabin for about $75 per night. In order to reserve a cabin you must apply in writing at least a couple of months in advance. The address is Haleakala National Park, Attention: Cabins, P.O. Box 369, Makawao, Hawaii 96768. Things get much easier if you decide on overnight tent camping. Permits are free and must be applied for in-person on the day of your stay.
Another alternative is the YMCA in Ke'anae. Cabins here can be shared for $15 per person, or you can tent camp for $35 per party. Bring your own food, but you can use their barbeque grill. Give the YMCA a call at 808-248-8355 for more information.
Enjoy your ultimate camping experience on the beautiful island of Maui.
