The Waihalao Falls on the northeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii is one of the tallest waterfalls in the United States. The falls are measured at twenty-six hundred feet. The falls are found in a remote area of the Waimanu Valley and require hiking and camping out to enjoy the beauty and the splendor. What a hidden gem to tell your friends all about when you get back home. These falls find themselves on many top lists.
Between mile marker 13 and 14 off of Highway 19 just north of Hilo is Akaka Falls. This is a very popular tourist bus stop, but for good reason, and another one of the best waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is about a half mile hike to get to the falls, but the walk is through a lush bamboo forest that passes by another waterfall, Kahuna Falls, so it is a two for one deal. But continue on, because you do not want to miss the 420 foot Akaka Falls. The Akaka Falls are the most popular waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii, and there is good reason.
In Hilo, off of Waianuenue Avenue, you will find Rainbow Falls. Do I even need to tell you why Rainbow Falls is one of the best waterfalls on the Big Island of Hawaii? Well, of course it is because of the amazing rainbows. The rainbows are best seen in the morning when the light is behind you. Rainbow Falls are about 80 feet tall and fall into a 100 foot pool. There is a cave behind the falls that is said to be the home of the goddess Hina.
Back on Highway 19 at mile marker 16 is the World Botanical Gardens. These gardens are home to the triple-tiered Umauma Falls. Unfortunately you have to pay a fee to get into the gardens to see the falls, but it is well worth it. It is a short drive to the Umauma Falls lookout. The falls look like steps with tranquil pools in between. Be sure to visit the World Botanical Gardens website before visiting to print out coupons for free tropical fruits and juices.
