STORY

"You have been chosen to represent Earth in Mortal Kombat. Be warned, for although your souls are safe from Shao Kahn's evil, your lives are not. I can no longer interfere as your Earth is now rules by the Outworld Gods." These are the words of Raiden. "For centuries Earth has used Mortal Kombat to defend itself against the Outworld's emperor, Shao Kahn. But Kahn grows frustrated by failed attempts at taking Earth through tournament battle. He enacts a plan which began 10,000 years ago."

"During this time, Shao Kahn had a queen. Her name was Sindel, and her young death was unexpected. Kahn's shadow priests, led by Shang Tsung, make it so Sindel's spirit would someday be reborn: not on the Outworld, but on the Earth realm itself. This unholy act gives Shao Kahn the power to step through the dimensional gates and reclaim his queen thus enabling him to finally seize the Earth realm."

"Upon branching the portal into Earth, Shao Kahn slowly transform the planet into a part of the Outworld itself. Kahn strips the Earth of all human life: claiming every soul as his own. But there are souls which Kahn cannot take. These souls belong to the warriors chosen to represent Earth in a new Mortal Kombat. The remaining humans are scattered throughout the planet. Shao Kahn sends an army of fierce Outworld warriors to find and eliminate them."

"After the first tournament, Sonya Blade turned up missing. Jax then embarked on a rescue mission into the Outworld. He found Sonya being held with her nemesis Kano. In freeing Sonya, Jax also frees Kano. Kano then uses the chance to escape arrest."

"The Ultimate Advancement in Lin Kuei technology comes with the creation of the first cyber assassins. They begin converting their human ninjas into souless machines. But Sub-Zero refuses to take part and is marked for death by his own clan."

"After winning the first Mortal Kombat and escaping from the Outworld, Liu Kang looks to the future. He begins training a new generation of Shaolin alongside Kung Lao. But nothing could prepare them for the unexpected Outworld invasion."

FINISHING MOVES

The most unique feature of any Mortal Kombat game is the finishing moves which could be perform to finish off your opponent or do other things to your opponent after winning a match. Remember that at the end of a winning match, once you make your final blow to your opponent's life bar, they will fall then immediately get dizzy with Shao Kahn shouting the key words, "Finish Him/Her!" During this time you will only had a few quick seconds to complete a finishing command in able to make it work.

Fatalities - These can only be done after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" in the winning round and in the correct distance on the screen.

Pit Fatality - These can only be perform at Scorpion's Lair, the Subway, the Bell Tower, and the Pit 3 stage. To knocked opponent off you must be near your opponent after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" in the winning round

Animality - These can be done after performing a Mercy! in the third winning round after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" After that, beat the opponent once more and this time input the Animality on the correct distance. It should work. (This finishing move is not available on the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions of Ultimate MK3).

Friendship - These can be perform almost anywhere on the screen after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" in the winning round provided you never use Block during that round.

Babality - Unlike Friendship, these can be perform anywhere on the screen after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" in the winning round provided you never use Block during that round.

Brutality - Unlike all finishing moves above, Brutality is a finishing combo in which player must perform by doing a button sequence simply by pressing a series of attack. It could only be done after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" in the winning round. (This finishing move is only exclusive to the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions of Ultimate MK3).

Mercy - To give mercy to your opponent, you must beat your opponent on the third winning round (your opponent must win at least one round before this), and after Shao Kahn shout "Finish Him/Her!, immediately hold down the Run button while standing at a far distance from your opponent, from there quickly press Down on the joystick about three or four times then release Run. You should hear Shao Kahn say the name of your character and remind you that you had just give mercy to your opponent. Giving Mercy to an opponent allowed him or her to resume fight with very little health. After you beat your opponent the second time; however, you would be allow to perform Animality or any finishing maneuvers you desire. (Mercy could not be perform in the Sega Genesis version of Ultimate MK3).

Note - You will only get five seconds to perform a finishing moves (two seconds in the Sega Genesis version), if after your seconds are up and you couldn't get the command to work, your dizzy opponent will get spare and fall instantly down to the ground clean. If you do get the finishing move to work, the screen will turn dark and an action of the finishing maneuver will take place. Of all the finishing moves mention above, the pit fatality is the only finisher that doesn't turn the screen dark since it serve more as a knocked out move instead.

DISTANCES

When performing a finishing move you need to know the right distance required for some of them, here are the ones most arcade players are familiar with...

Close - Standing next to opponent, the same distance in which you could hit or combo your opponent. This distance is used the most when performing a Pit fatality.

Sweep Distance - About two feet away from opponent, it's the distance where you can't hit your opponent but could still foot sweep them. An example of this is Liu Kang's animality.

Outside Sweep - About three to four feet away from opponent, the distance where you can jump over your opponent to the opposite side as well as the distance where you can't foot sweet your opponent. An example of this is Nightwolf's friendship.

Jump Distance - The same distance where you can forward flip jump to get near your opponent but not to the other side. An example of this is Scorpion's Toasty fatality.

Half Screen - About one foot outside jump distance. You should still not be near your opponent if you make a forward flip jump at this distance. An example of this is Sonya's Purple Death fatality.

Far Away - The distance as far away from the opponent as possible even outside of Half Screen. For this distance, it would have to at least take you two forward flip jumps to reach near your opponent or while near your opponent. An example of this is Mileena's Nail Spit fatality.

Anywhere - Any of the above distances. This applies to babality the most as they could be perform near or away from opponent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some frequently asked questions that I've receive regarding Ultimate MK3.

Question - There are no Brutality in Ultimate MK3, I went to the arcade various times and could not even manage to make a single hit on my dying opponent using your movelist, so what's up with that?

Answer - Try your hard button sequences on the 16-Bit versions and rest your thumbs, okay.

Question - I thought you say we could perform Friendship anywhere on the screen if we don't use Block so why can't I get Scorpion's to work?

Answer - If you had read carefully, I say some could be done anywhere, thanks for your reminder though, but if a Friendship required a distance, it would be listed accordingly with their command on the movelist, be sure to check for the distance before you come to conclusion.

Question - I swear I saw Rain beating Shao Kahn in the arcade, is there any way to play as him at all?

Answer - I think Rain is not actually available for play at the arcade, perhaps he might be playable on other versions of the arcade such as the WaveNet machines since Noob Saibot was confirm to be playable in those versions but I'm not sure. He is; however, playable in the 16-Bit versions by default if that interest you.

Question - How come you list both Animality and Brutality in this FAQs?

Answer - I list both of them here because this FAQs applies to all versions of Ultimate MK3 and Animality or Brutality (one or the other) are available on different versions of the game.

Question - I can't believe that Mercy still works in the Super NES version of Ultimate MK3; however, I couldn't get Animality to work, should it work if I already done the Mercy?

Answer - There are no Animality in the Super NES version of Ultimate MK3 even if there was Mercy, the same applies to the Sega Genesis. The reason for this is that lazy Williams forgot to take the Mercy out when they disband the Animality on the Super NES. On the Sega Genesis version, when you access the Quick End option in the "Killer Code" cheat menu, the Animality option is still there but even if you use that option it still won't work, Williams also forgot to take that option out as well.

Question - Is there any known code to access the red Hidden Portal stage from MK3 in this game?

Answer - That stage was replace with the blue portal "The Lost World" now, so there are no known code to access the stage. In the original MK3, the Hidden Portal stage was also inaccessible and could only be played when player fight cyborg Smoke with the use of a vs. kombat kode. That stage; however; was accessible in the PlayStation version of MK3 as well as in MK Trilogy for the Nintendo 64.

Question - Why is Sheeva not available in the 16-Bit versions of Ultimate MK3?

Answer - Sheeva is not available for play on the 16-Bit versions because she was the least favorite of the cast when Ultimate MK3 was port for the home versions. She was; however, playable as a glitch character in the Super NES version, though playable she couldn't perform any special or finishing moves. On some versions of that game, she could even perform finishing moves such as the fatalities, pit fatality, and brutality.

Question - Since Sheeva is not available on the 16-Bit versions, why gave her a Brutality when she doesn't even had one in the 16-Bit versions and since she is only fully playable on the other versions which lack the Brutality?

Answer - A lot of gamers may not know this but there were various different versions of Ultimate MK3 for the Super NES. A few of them actually had a glitch Sheeva who could perform the fatalities and brutality finishing moves. If your version couldn't do it, you probably had a newer version of Ultimate MK3. The cartridge version that I had actually feature a glitch Sheeva who could perform Brutality but no special moves; however, my friend who had the same copy of the game had a glitch Sheeva who could not perform any special and finishing moves at all. Also another reminder is that the glitch Sheeva won't be able to perform the finishing moves when playing on an emulator since her data is temporary.

Question - You are wrong, Shang Tsung couldn't morph into Smoke, Rain, and Noob Saibot in Ultimate MK3, why did you make those stuff up?

Answer - I do agree with you halfway there; however, if you manage to play the Sega Genesis version, you'll be impressed that he could in fact morph into any of those character with no problem. You probably spend too much time with the arcade or other versions that you never know Tsung could do this exclusively on the Sega Genesis.

Question - Why does the Super NES version only had seven backgrounds with the five new ones been the only stages accessible by default?

Answer - The Super NES version had less backgrounds because it had more features to make it up such as an Eight Man Tournament Mode, the option to play as both bosses, the ability to turn on and off combos, sweeps, blocks and throws, the option to perform easy finishers, enable the UKK hidden characters as playable by default, among other things.

Question - So why does the Sega Genesis version had more backgrounds than the Super NES version?

Answer - The Sega Genesis version lack the Mercy feature, the Animality, the quality sounds, the detail backgrounds, a few quotes and animations as well as the lack of Sheeva and the 8 Man Tournament Mode which the Sega Genesis version back up with more classic stages.

Question - My friend and I had just enter the "Rain Can Be Found At The Graveyard" vs. kombat kode upon reaching the Graveyard stage in the Sega Saturn version of Ultimate MK3. To our expectation, the message did appear on the bottom of the screen, but as we play throughout that stage we didn't spot any clue or sign of that Rain character. Could this code be false?

Answer - Yes, Midway make this code up to pretend he is in the game and also to hype up quarters just to find him. Be glad you and your friend didn't do this at the arcade.

Question - Why is there load time issues on the Sega Saturn version of Ultimate MK3 whereas the PS2 version had none at all, they are both disc based versions aren't they?

Answer - To tell you the truth, the Sega Saturn version is a port of the arcade game whereas the PS2 game is a rom version which is just an emulation of the arcade game. The reason the PS2 version had no loading time during gameplay is because Midway emulate the entire arcade game onto a PS2 DVD rom disc whereas the Sega Saturn version was made from the ground-up using the Sega Saturn's own hardware limitation and software dumping in able to successfully make a port out of it, this also applies to the PlayStation and PC versions of Mortal Kombat 3 as well since they; too, is not an emuation but a port.

Question - Why didn't you list any glitches about Ultimate MK3 in this FAQs?

Answer - I love doing glitches as well but I find them unimportant as my focus is on game play and features and not glitches. With the glitch Sheeva; however, I found that to be interesting though I won't count it as a glitch since Sheeva is a character and not a glitch.

Question - Why can't I knock opponent up to the Street or the Balcony while playing in the Subway and Soul Chamber stage in the Sega Genesis version?

Answer - The Street and the Balcony were not available in the Sega Genesis version due to the Sega Genesis low memory storage. Because of this, you now face Motaro at the any random stage unlike the arcade version.

Question - Do you know how I can find a copy of the PS2 version of Ultimate MK3, at first I thought it was included in Midway's Arcade Treasures 2, but that was only MKII and MK3, so where is it?

Answer - The PS2 version of Ultimate MK3 is bundle as a bonus freebie inside a specialize version of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon exclusively for the PS2. Go to your nearest videogame stores such as Electronic Boutique, GameStop, or Funcoland and be sure to find the version that doesn't had the dragon logo on the cover and you'll guaranteed yourself an Ultimate MK3 with your Armageddon; otherwise, you'll end up getting the disc without the bonus features and the game.

Question - Why didn't you list all the bios and/or character endings for this FAQs?

Answer - For the bios, I think you pretty much know all of them just by playing both MK3 and Ultimate MK3 (or by reading through other FAQs online). For the endings, that is because I don't want to offer any spoilers. All I had to say is that unlike MK3's, Ultimate MK3's endings are pretty much lacking.

Question - I just want to know, how do you play the Sega Genesis version of Ultimate MK3 using a three buttons controller?

Answer - For the Sega Genesis version of Ultimate MK3, using a three buttons controller, the A button is use for Low Punch, B is use for Block, and C is use for Low Kick; however, by holding A and pressing B will register as a High Punch while holding C and pressing B will register as a High Kick. To use Run, just hold START while pointing forward on the D-Pad. If this feels awkward to you, then you are better off using a six buttons controller instead which makes it that much easier to play.

Question - Why didn't you list any cheat device codes (example: GameShark, Game Genie, etc.) for this game?

Answer - Ultimate MK3 is an arcade game and as an arcade game it was meant not to have cheat code. For the home versions; however, you could find various cheat device codes for it on different consoles at www.gamewinners.com or at various sites such as www.gamegenie.com or www.gameshark.com.

Question - Why did you include Mortal Kombat Advance in this FAQs, that game didn't play so much like Ultimate MK3 at all, it doesn't deserve a strategy guide?

Answer - True, but that game was a mere port of the 16-Bit versions. To tell you the truth, that game didn't live-up to the graphics of the Game Boy Advance, but it does had some of the best sounds and music compare to the 16-Bit versions. If the lazy team responsible for that game didn't rush the game forward and fix the control, that game would have being a great addition to the GBA library since compare to the Nintendo DS version. That game was a port with almost no glitch except the cheap AI whereas the Nintendo DS version is an emulation with online glued to the features with no new exclusives compare to the GBA port.

Question - Could I play Ultimate MK3 via online with the PS2 version?

Answer - Sad to say this but no matter how great MK: Armageddon did with their online functionality for the PS2, Midway didn't take the time to include it with this game on that same disc.

Question - I have trouble executing the Brutality in both the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions because I couldn't keep up with all the button presses in your movelist, could you provide me an easier method if any?

Answer - As far as I know of, there are two easier methods you could try for Brutality but both only works on the Super NES versions, so if you had the Sega Genesis one it won't help you as much. The first method is to enter the One Button Brutality vs. kombat kode (see exclusive Super NES kombat kodes above) in a two-player game, then after you beat your opponent when Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" just hit High Punch and the sequence will automatically begin letting you see your character's full Brutality take effect. The second method though required you to access the Kool and Kooler Stuff cheat menus (see cheat menus code above), from there turn on the "Extend Fatality Time" and "Enable a Pause Feature" options and start a match on any game mode. Then when you finish the match after Shao Kahn shout, "Finish Him/Her!" Get to as close to your opponent as possible, since you have already turn on "Extended Fatality Time" you do not have to worry about the short time limit. Now while near your opponent, hit START to pause the game (it will work if you enable the pause feature) and begin your characters first attack input then unpause and see the sequence through then repeat with the second input following the rest, after you have successfully enter all the inputs while pausing and unpausing after each one, your character should automatically perform the rest of the action on their own immediately after the final input and the screen should turn dark similar to when you perform a finishing move. If you mess up by entering the wrong input, you'll have to try the trick again on your next winning match. I'll provide Scorpion's Brutality below using this method as an example so you could see what I mean.

To Perform Scorpion's Brutality

Get in close, then hit Pause, then HP, then Pause, then HP, then Pause, then BL, then Pause, then HK, then Pause, then HK, then Pause, then LK, then Pause, then HK, then Pause, then HP, then Pause, then HP, then Pause, then LP, then Pause, then HP

It should at least take you about eleven pauses after each input in able to make it through, sounds boring isn't it but it works though. Because the Sega Genesis version doesn't had any cheats for a pause feature nor does it had any easy option for performing a Brutality not to mention that the game only allowed two seconds to perform a finishing moves, there won't likely be any easy way to pull it off on that version unless if there's a cheat device like a Game Genie involve. That's the best that I could say about performing Brutality on both versions.

UPDATE: Minor mistakes found in this FAQs that I should point out, the UKK for the Sega Saturn and Nintendo DS versions of Ultimate MK3 had less slots than the original arcade version. The Sega Saturn version had six slots and could be enter using only one controller while the Nintendo DS version had five slots. Only the arcade and X-Box Live Arcade versions had ten slots. Also one last update according to Son Ninja, Shang Tsung could indeed morph into Smoke in the Sega Saturn version of Ultimate MK3 by pressing B, B, D, Low Kick.

  • Anime Boy5/14/2008

UPDATE: I had just received words from Son Ninja regarding a minor mistake in this article. In the vs. kombat kode section, the 707-000 or 000-707 codes are for Quarter Power and the 033-000 or 000-033 codes are for Half Power.
