There are literally hundreds of options for you to choose from in receiving your ultrasound technician training. There are technical schools which focus on training medical specialists and technicians to fill the increasing demands of the medical field. These courses tend to be about two years in length and cover many of the basics of your ultrasound technician training, including maintenance of the machines as well as interpreting data received by them. There are also colleges and universities which offer training in ultrasound technology. These institutions are usually better staffed and have a certain cache when it comes time to find a job after graduation. Still there are many who graduate from technical schools who do just fine in landing a job once they graduate.

College and University courses

College and university courses in training ultrasound technicians are usually a bit longer and more intensive than those at technical colleges and institutions. Higher education coursework for ultrasound technicians tends to be more well-rounded and draw from a greater pool of expert talent to teach courses to the students. There are a number of state-funded and private colleges and universities which offer technicians training in different sub-specialties such as cardio-thoracic imagery, medical sonography, and vascular sonography which are often only briefly covered in technical schools. Colleges and universities which train ultrasound technicians can be found in all states, but also abroad such as in Canada as well. Schools in Canada are a good alternative as the cost of tuition tends to be slightly lower while the training is equal tot hat received in the United States.

Ultrasound technician job description

As an ultrasound technician you will employ a sonogram to view the workings of someone's interior. Sound waves travel through the body and bounce back to the receiver/transmitter. Denser material such as bone returns more sound waves and thus returns stronger images while soft tissue returns few sound waves returning less strong images. An ultrasound technician interprets the image generated by the sound waves and projected onto a small screen to determine the workings of organs, veins and arteries, and even the heart and lungs of a person. You then use this information to form a diagnosis which is them passed on to the physician in charge. The information you provide adds critical information to the decisions of the doctor and the patient.

Length of training

The length of training for a college or university-trained ultrasound technician is usually four years. Some programs are accelerated and may graduate well-trained technicians in three or even two years. These programs are very work intensive and it should be understood that your course load will be relatively high. Training time in college and university level ultrasound technician training courses is time well spent, however, and will pay innumerable dividends when you apply to enter the work force after graduation; the flexibility offered by broader training at the university or college level usually results in higher pay and more opportunities as well as multiple job offers in the right market.
