Uncertainties of New Parents

If You're a New Parent, Do You Know What You've Gotten Yourself Into?

Matthew Schieltz
There are many new parents each and every day that are apprehensive about their ability to parent their newborn boy or girl. Even though every set of parents struggle through their role as parents, whether successful or unsuccessful, all parents face many of the same questions right before the birth of their new child and even through the days and months following the birth process.

Listening to Instincts

Even though parents can learn a great deal about parenting through research, reading news articles and family magazines, as well as discussions with other parents, the best thing for the child is you. Listening to your maternal and paternal instincts will not only be a great helper when you have to decide when to take your precious child to the doctor, but it will also help you in disciplining your child. You are the person that knows your child the best since he or she is a part of you, and both the parents should be included when it comes to the parenting role.

Having your child's grandparents around can also be a great relief when you first bring your newborn home from the hospital, they should not be the primary ones to care for your child. They have had their time to take care of their own child, so now it is your turn to put your parenting skills to work when it comes to the care of your child.

Both Parents Need a Role

The mother should not place too heavy a load on her husband when it comes to the discipline part of parenting; however, neither should the father expect too much of the mother when he is away at work. Just as the couple's marriage is an equal share of each partner, so too should parenting be an equal share of each person's responsibility. Let's face it: taking care of a newborn child can be a difficult, and sometimes daunting, task. There will be moments when you want to just put down your child and let your better-half take over and there will also be moments when you are proud of your parenting skills. But both parents need to realize that parenting is a combination of both of them and not just one!

All in all, parenting your child requires great care of both the mother and the father! By trying to be a good parent even in the face of uncertainties is a great gift to your child and will help you raise your child better! Love, no matter what, is the best gift you could give your child, and remembering that through the process of parenting is of utmost importance when becoming a new parent!
