Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Featuring No Mandatory Installation

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of the best-looking video games ever made. It is also quite impressive in terms of technology as well since it won't need mandatory installation on the Playstation 3. Sony launched the Playstation 3 on November 11, 2006. It was the third home console for Sony, who has previously produced the Playstation and Playstation 2. The original Playstation is largely responsible for popularizing the use of digital format as game mediums with the CD offering more storage space than you typical cartridge.

The Playstation 2 further expanded the storage space for video games with the DVD format. In fact, the second video game system from Sony is largely credited for leading the rise of DVD movies. Sony hoped to strike gold for the third time with Blu-Ray and the Playstation 3.

This time, however, it wasn't a smooth sailing for Sony. This is because Blu-Ray had to compete with another rival format, the HD DVD. After a rather lengthy battle, Blu-Ray finally prevailed in early 2008. As a result, Blu-Ray movies rose in sales.

However, the format is still relatively new in the gaming scene. While the format offers huge amount of space, it can posed quite a problem when loading the data off of the disc. As a result, most developer had to curve the loading times of Playstation 3 games by installing a game on the hard drive.

This comes in two flavors: optional and mandatory. While most Playstation 3 gamers have no problem with optional install, the mandatory ones grate on them. Size for the installs vary but can be as much as 5 GB. Those who purchase plenty of games on the Playstation 3 can quickly have their hard drive filled up.

Most of the mandatory installation requirements come from third-party multiplatform games. Because multiplatform developers built their titles with the DVD format in mind, the games ended up needing to install on a hard drive when transferred to the Blu-Ray format of the Playstation 3.

There are several ways to curve the installation on the Playstation 3, however. Naughty Dog, a first-party development studio owned by Sony, has more time with the hardware than anyone else. As a result, they were able to build an engine for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune with incredible visuals with zero load times and installation to boot.

Although Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a far more advance game in terms of gameplay and graphics compared to the original, it will have no installation as well. Being one of the best-looking games ever is one thing, but achieving it with no installation and presumably no load times is an incredible task from Naughty Dog.

You can see for yourself the technical wizardry of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves when the game comes out exclusively for the Playstation 3 on October 13th.
