The exclusive game was released in North America on November 19, 2007. It was the first Playstation 3 project from world-renowned developer, Naughty Dog. Founded in 1986, the development studio didn't have a big hit until a decade later with the arrival of Crash Bandicoot. The four Playstation games went on to become some of the best-selling titles on the system. However, rights to the game were sold to Universal Studios.
As a result, Naughty Dog had to begin anew with the Playstation 2. Fortunately for them, they were able to come up with another popular franchise with the Jak series. They would stop developing the popular games after the fourth title again though. This time, Naughty Dog wanted to go with a more mature direction with the Playstation 3.
As a result, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was born. Instead of cartoon characters, the new Naughty Dog franchise features real adult humans. A storyline is also a lot more mature this time around as well since you will be literally killing pirates throughout the game. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is partly a third-person shooter where cover plays a big role in the gameplay. When you aren't involved big shootouts, you have to explore the diverse settings in the game by jumping and climbing through most of the environment.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune became one of the highest-rated Playstation 3 exclusive games ever. Unfortunately, many felt that it didn't sell as well as it could have when it was released. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune still sold well enough to become a Greatest Hits game on the Playstation 3.
In order to reach the prestige status, a video game must display strong sales and be on the market for the allotted amount of time. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune easily met those criteria to become a Greatest Hits title. In fact, many were surprise to see it take so long to come into fruition.
A possible explanation for the delay may be that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was packed-in with the limited edition 160 GB Playstation 3 bundle in the fall of 2008. Selling the game at a budgeted price then would have significantly lower the value of the bundle.
Thus, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune wasn't a Greatest Hits game until now. The game will be repackaged with a special "Greatest Hits" casing and sold at a budgeted $29.99. The announcement seems like perfect timing as the sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, is slated to be released exclusively on the Playstation 3 this fall.
