Uncommon Pets: Lizards
You will need to make sure your lizard's environment is kept fresh and clean, and that there is a constant source of light in the environment. It should be properly heated, since the temperature is vital to a lizard's survival. Do not let your lizard wander around without supervision, since he will likely damage anything he can get to. Buy a custom cage for your lizard at the pet store; add some sanitized rocks to his cage and clean it regularly.
Uncommon Pets: Spiders
If you are keeping a poisonous spider as a pet, you will need to make absolutely sure it doesn't escape. That being said, identify the type of spider and read up on its eating habits--just don't give your pet spider an insect that is bigger than him. He might end up being eaten by his own dinner. Make sure he has a constant water supply by placing a wet sponge in his cage.

This tiny critter is adorable with its big, black eyes and fun-loving personality. However, you might need to acquire a permit in order to own a flying squirrel, or any type of wildlife. Flying squirrels are interesting and entertaining, but they can be costly to keep. You will need to take him to the veterinarian regularly, and read up on how to care for your new little friend.
Uncommon Pets: Exotic Birds
Birds (especially those that talk) can be fun to keep as pets. However, they require special care, as do any uncommon pets. Keep your pet birds in a cage when you aren't able to supervise them; you don't want them flying out the windows or doors. Keep their cages fresh and clean and research they eating habits of your particular bird. Exotic birds prefer warmth, so make sure they are kept warm during the winter.
Uncommon Pets: Rats
Most people don't like the idea of having rats in their home, since they have been known to carry disease. In fact, most people do what they can to keep them out of the house. However, others have found rats to be enjoyable companions. Keep your pet rat in a cage, and make sure to clean it very often, since rats tend to have a rather strong smell. Further research the eating habits of your pet before buying a rat.
