Unconventional Ways to Treat Your Cold

Here Are Some Alternatives when Nothing Else Will Work

When you come down with a cold it can be hard to deal with the symptoms. Runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat and headache are just some of the scary signs that might be time for a day off and some rest. Here are some lesser-known methods for dealing with a cold. These are by no means medically approved or studied. Usually the best way to treat a cold is to visit your doctor, drink plenty of liquids and rest.

Some say that English mustard works wonders on a stuffy nose. Simply open a jar and place your nostrils close to the mustard then inhale deeply through the nose. The mustard is said to clear the nasal passages.

An even crazier idea is to crush up a mint ( possibly Altoids or something similar ) into a fine powder and snort it nasally to clear a stuffy nose. I have heard people say it works but I cannot vouch for this myself. You'll want to use caution with something like this because inhaling substances nasally could cause irritation. If you're really desperate for relief this could be worth a try.

If you have a larger sized soup or stew pot you can make your own steam treatment. You'll want to use an old or rarely used one because the pot might be hard to clean after this method. Place the pot on the stove and add several cups of water to it. To the water you can add about a tablespoon of Vics Vapor Rub. Bring the vapor water to a boil. After the water is boiling remove the pot from heat. Place your face near the pot and drape a large towel over your head. Breathe in the steam deeply. You can repeat this treatment as often as necessary by reboiling the water.

You can also apply a little Vics Vapor Rub directly around the nose. The vapors will aid in congestion while the petroleum jelly helps defend against a raw nose. I have found that applying the jelly to an already irritated nose can sting. Use caution when applying.

For a great home remedy cough syrup, try this recipe:

8 oz. orange juice
Fresh lemon juice or concentrate to taste
Honey to taste
A shot of premium whiskey

Combine all ingredients and take a tablespoon as you would cough syrup about every four hours.

Remember when you are feeling ill with a cold to always drink plenty of liquids. A hot soup is also a timeless way to soothe symptoms when you're sick. Take it easy and you are sure to be back on your feet in no time.
