Under $100 Ideas for Redecorating Your Living Room for Spring 2011

C. Jeanne Heida
Spring is a great time to brighten up our living rooms with a deep cleaning and a little redecorating. Scrubbing down the walls and ceilings, shampooing the carpeting, and polishing the furniture & light fixtures to a high shine is one way to brighten up the living room for spring. A little redecorating can also make a big difference.

For those of us pinched for cash, updating our living room doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Here's some simple ways that you can change the look of your living room for under $100.

Move the furniture around. Sometimes all that's needed to change the look of a room is to rearrange the furniture. At my house, I'll flip the furniture around at least twice a year (even removing a few pieces if necessary) to give the living room a fresh new look.

Buy an inexpensive area rug. A colorful area rug is a fantastic way of changing the appearance of a living room. Area rugs are used in our home to camouflage worn areas on carpeting and define intimate seating areas, 5 x 7 area rugs can be found for $100 or less at places like Ross, Tuesday Mornings, Shopko, and Overstock.com.

New lampshades. A new lampshade is more than a pretty way to cover up a light bulb; it can also change the color of your living room. Plain white or off white table lamp shades can be purchased for as little as $10 at thrift stores and consignment shops. Funky patterned shades, Victorian shades, or colored shades can be found online at vendors such as lampsusa.com.

Paint. A fresh coat of paint is also an inexpensive way to redecorate a living room at a budget price. Avoid white and select one of the many popular colors for 2011 which include citrus yellow, light green, pinkish lilac, and blue. To visualize how these colors will look in your living room, use the color visualizer at Sherwin-williams.com.

Haul out the old stuff from the attic. Vintage is the look for 2011 which means that raiding the attic for old stuff from the 50s and 60s is both chic and green. Mom and Dad's old lamps, bric a brac and old artwork are just a few examples of funky items that can be paired with your existing furniture for an updated look.

I've moved about once a year for the past few years, so my living room gets a new look every time ;) Great ideas, though.

So nice to hear that "vintage" is in :) I knew if we hung in there long enough we'd come back into vogue! I have always said that our eclectic mix of furniture (mostly hand-me-downs!) is "Early Modern Poverty" but much of it is vintage - like the end tables that my 90-year-old father made when he was in Shop Class at the highschool. I love them :) cheers!!!!

I just took the never used two piece living room set from my never used "living room" and am adding a new set in there. It changed the entire look of my family room. Great ideas.
