Under the Tree, A Cat's View - A Christmas Poem

Rita Kungas
I just came in from the snowy cold air,

Rushing to sit in my favorite chair.

But something else is in it's place.

Is this bewildered looking face?

I question as I walk around their feet.

"Where is my chair? It's my favorite seat."

"Why is there a tree inside?

They are for climbing but always outside.

What are these things shiny and round?"

I swat with my paw and they fall to the ground.

I talk and talk but I am ignored.

I roll over and then I am floored!

There are strange boxes and colorful strings

I must touch them, chase them, these wonderful things!

I'm under the tree looking up through the branches,

Wondering if I should take those chances;

Of climbing up high to see far away.

Lying here under the tree today.

The limbs look strange, but I cannot resist.

My curiosity is greater, and no branch have I ever missed.

I'll first run real fast, watching them jump.

I'll tear around the tree and fall with a bump.

I'll lay on the boxes and chew on the bow.

And under a tree is where I always go!

Then when they aren't looking, I run up the trunk.

Did someone just say, "That cat must be drunk?"

From under the tree the lights shine through.

I want to touch them, it's what I must do.

I hear the words "Christmas presents", something good I suppose.

I hear about secrets, paper, and bows.

I've run so much I am too tired to see.

So again, I lay down under the tree.

It's so cozy and I like it a lot.

I think I've just found a new favorite spot.

My eyelids are heavy watching the glow.

I stretch and yawn; sleep is coming I know.

Looking up again, I jump to my feet, fully aware

I can believe what I see! Oh, what I see up there!

They are all screaming, running in the house.

I got my present early, the gift of a mouse!
