Under-Eye Circles: Is There Anything You Can Do About Them?

M. Vaz
Too obvious eye bags, puffiness and under-eye dark circles make us feel uncomfortable and unattractive, which may lower our self-esteem.

This is not just one sign of aging but may indicate that you are stressed or undernourished, or you may be suffering with some health problems or hormonal imbalances which may need immediate attention in order to prevent it to further serious complications.

Why do we have it?

For us to cure under-eye circles, or much better prevent it, we must know first its causes. According to health experts, there are several causes of it:

Heredity - it runs in the blood of our great grandmothers and was passed to our genes and we can't do anything about this.

Aging - just a natural process where our skin becomes thin and eventually reduces suppleness
Stress - being subjected to the daily pressures of life causes the under-eyes circles to appear darker, as being in the state of constant worry may lead to lack of sleep. But take note, don't oversleep too as same result may happen

Poor nutrition - unbalanced diets causes the accumulation of impurities or toxins making our bodies unhealthy that includes primarily our skin.

Too much and too little fluid - some of the liquid we take in will settle in our eye area, so just imagine how puffy it is when we drink excess fluids other than water that is beyond our body's capacity to retain. In contrast, dehydration may also result to under-eye circles

Warning sign- dark under-eye circles might be a symptom of allergy, kidney malfunction, periorbital cellulitis, mononucleosis or any health problems

As we become knowledgeable regarding the basic yet most important factors that triggers under-eye circles, let us now find means on how to avoid it.

We cannot inhibit heredity and aging as they are an integral part and stage of being human. But we can live with it as long as we know how to hide and minimize the degree of such condition.

Commercially, there are available concealers and powders that you can put on right away to mask your dark under-eye circles. However, you have to retouch from time to time as the effect may wear off especially if you sweat a lot. We may then feel unsatisfied with such a temporary solution.

But there are alternatives rather than the quick but temporary effect of concealing. And here, we need to be patient and consistent. Some of these remedies are as follows:

Healthy living - one must practice proper diet and regular exercise. There are certain foods that we must avoid. Examples are foods that may contain an allergen to our system or foods that are rich in sodium and salt as these can contribute to puffy eyes. Get yourself involved in foods rich with Vitamin E, that's for the skin as well as rich in iron and vitamin C. You can supplement your diet by taking these vitamins too. Daily exercise regulates good circulation of the blood. A healthy living flashes out toxins and impurities from our body that will reflect a radiant-looking skin

Vegetable and fruits - you may harvest from your garden if you have some of the following:

Cucumber - place the sliced and cooled cucumber on your eyes for 10 minutes. Cucumber juice reduces puffiness too

Potato - extract juice from potato and massage in your to reduce puffiness

Almond oil - or if this is too expensive, use peanut oil. Just rub around your eyes as well

Tomato or lemon juice - a mixture of these will reduce dark-under eye circle. For five minutes, let it sit on your undereye area with the precaution of avoiding getting it inside your eyes.

(Don't forget to rinse your face as well. )

Consult your doctor regularly - as a symptom, under-eyes circles should be given an immediate attention and advice from experts. To avoid further complications, better see a doctor to confirm your real health status. It is not just the puffy eyes, eye bags or dark circles around your eyes, it may be something worse than you thought.

Enough water and sleep - excessive lack of water and sleep are both big NO's! Just follow the 8 glasses per day and at least 8 hours of sleep too. Refrain from taking fluids with too much caffeine in it. Enough sleep will reduce stress too, although these two are interchangeable. With less stress, you can have a good nap as well.

Be positive - take anything that comes to you in a brighter and lighter way. So see things in a positive way. Don't let stress overrule you.

Don't neglect simple changes in your body. Aiming to be and to stay beautiful inside and out is not a bad thing. It can give you confidence and satisfaction.
