Understanding Annabell Lee

Shannon
Below is my analysis of the poem Annabell Less, by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is a very famous poet and in my opinion a little demented. I have read that he would lock him self in a dark closet filled with spiders and other creepy- crawlies for the inspiration of many of his poems. Nevertheless, Poe's work is know world wide by people of all ages.

Before we can analyzes this poem we first need to understand the following concepts: themes, mood and point of view. The theme can be defined as the main idea of the peace. The mood can be described as the setting and feeling that one gets from reading the peace. The point of view can be described as the author's view and how the story is told.

The theme in the poem Annabell, is love and death. In this poem the two main characters are very young and fall in love. The poem appears to say that the two lovers fell in love as children and loved each other for a long time. Until one day, Annabell was taken away. She was taken away by death. Ultimately, the mans love for Annabell was so strong that after she died he wishes to die so that they may be together forever. Everything the man sees reminds him of Annabell.

The mood and setting of this poem is sadness and sorrow. The man in the poem remembers all the happy times and love he had with Annabell, but he also wishes to die in order to be with his sweet Annabell. At the end the man dies, happily knowing that soon he will be with his Annabell once again, forever.

This poem in told in the first person (author's) point of view. Poe wrote this pace to portray his feeling towards a young women, possibly his wife. In this poem he express his love towards women and all the pain he felt when she died. Poem also shows use that he was in so much pain after this women died that he him self wished to die. Everything that Poe sees reminds him of this women, thus making him want to die even more to be with her.

After carefully, reviewing and re-reading the poem Annabee Lee, by Poe, I was able to find the theme, mood and the authors point of view. By doing this I was able to better comprehended and understand the poem. After reading this poem I was a little quires as to whom this poem was about. So I did a little research and found that the poem was about his early wife(Virginia Clemm). The two of them married at only the age of 13. She died of tuberculosis. Poe wrote this poem after her death and it was the last poem he ever wrote. Shortly after his wife's death he died as well. I believe that when Poe's wife died, he dead on the inside. Thus, leaving only a physical body that died shortly after his souls died.
