Understanding the Basics of Lasik

Many people opt for Lasik Surgery or "Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis". This procedure helps restore vision in those who have nearsightedness, Farsightedness, and even astigmatism. While there are several ways to preform Lasik surgery depending on the reason for your vision trouble will tell the surgeon what needs to be done during the procedure. The procedure uses an instrument called a microkeratome or a laser called a Femtosecond which is used to make a thin circular flap on the cornea. Which is folded back so tissue can be removed from the surface.

For those with nearsightedness the tissue needs to be removed flattening the surface of the cornea. For those who have farsightedness the procedure needs to be preformed making the tissue a bit steeper on the cornea. With astigmatism the procedure is preformed to reshape the cornea changing it from irregular to a more rounder normal shape.

The Lasik procedure generally takes less than 5 minutes per eye but the doctor will have you rest a bit afterward. The procedure is generally done out patient and you can return home the same day. The surgeon will use numbing drops to relax the eye and may give you an oral sedative to relax you during the procedure.

After the procedure many experience their vision improving right away, others it can take up to a few weeks for their vision to improve. Though the procedure is meant to improve vision occasionally some patients have still needed to wear glasses or contacts after a Lasik procedure. The surgeon will recommend that you do not engage in strenuous exercise for one week after the procedure or rub the eye under any circumstances.

Some patients have experienced side effects such as starbursts or Halos following Lasik procedures. If you experience any problems in vision after your procedure contact your surgeon immediately. As with all procedures there are some possibilities of side effects.

The Lasik procedure has changed many patients quality of vision and it can improve your vision as well. If you are interested in the Lasik procedures visit: www.boxerwachler.com or www.eyeexcellence.com
