Understanding Current Teenage Language and Text Language

Teen Chatter Part 1

Ambriel Maji
As the mother of a teenage daughter I hear acronyms where once words use to be. Due to this new age if I want to know what's going on in her life I need to learn a whole new language. Parents are responsible for knowing what their kids are involved in and due to this new digital age we must now learn an entirely new language that may seem even harder then Spanish. Let's call this new teenage way of conversing teen chatter.

Teen chatter is becoming increasingly popular among teens as many parents are unable to understand what all these new acronyms and terms mean. It's almost a way for teens to talk in code while among adults. This could possibly lead to situations that could have been avoided if the parents understood the language. Just like language barriers between different races, these language barriers exist between parents and teens.

Ever heard your child use the word safe out of content, for example safe girl or safe man. Safe when used in this content is a way of saying Hi.

I once saw HTC in my daughter's status on a famous social networking site. I panicked, thinking HTC as in marijuana. I started first with a search engine looking for teenage slang and what HTC could possibly mean. When I could not come up with anything I decided it was time to sit her down and have her teach me her language. I come to find out HTC simply means "hit the cell" obviously it's a simple way of telling people to text message her.

The days of actually laughing or saying "oh my gosh" are simply over with teen chatter they are actually ending conversations with LOL (Laugh out loud) and OMG.

Sick no longer means someone is ill or something is bad it now means the exact opposite. When teens refer to something being "sick" they mean it's cool or awesome. It's no wonder us parents are getting confused the dictionary no longer carries meaning with teen chatter.

Just because you want to understand your teen don't run out and start using teen chatter as your new adopted language chances are you will only embarrass your teen and yourself.
