Understanding Cyber Charter Schools and Their Role in Education

Kathleen Lynn
Cyber Charter schooling is an option more parents are leaning towards in the education of their children. This is because today's families are busy and active. The mother and father may both have full time employment, yet, still wish their child did not have to enter the public school system. For those parents, Cyber Charter is a much needed solution for their child's education .

However, given the topic of this article, this author feels it vitally important to note that calling Cyber Charter a home school is a huge gray area and controversial topic. For the purposes of this article, I will talk about Cyber Charter as if it were independent of the other educational opportunities provided. In its own right that is exactly what this option is. It is not a true old fashioned home school environment in which the parent maintains full control over the child's education, it is supported by public funding and yet does not mandate that children attend a brick and mortar building so it is not a public school completely.

Cyber Charter education brings many controversial issues in the open but what does it offer parents and students to make them consider this option?

First, one of the attractive components of this choice is that it offers the student the necessary tools they will need to succeed in this program. Many of the programs offer the students computers, textbooks, and other resources to meet the goals of their curriculum. In terms of financial costs of traditional homeschooling, some parents see this as a better option for monetary reasons. Parents also feel since they pay taxes into the educational system, and cyber charter benefits off those taxes that they are getting better long term usage out of their funds as well.

The second thing cyber charter programs do is helping take the work load and responsibility off the parent some. For those finding themselves strapped with more than one child at various levels and ages, and stressed from the amount of time they have to individualize each of their children's education and provide the best, having a cyber charter that will provide the curriculum, tests, and lesson plans for you is a very attractive benefit. Though this will appeal to some parents who are balancing employment or multiple children schooling at home , it also may detract for others. By using this benefit of cyber charter you also give up your rights to mandate the curriculum that will be presented to your child. You do not have the control over what the tests will be or when they are given.

Another thing the cyber charter programs offer to children is preparing them for life beyond their classroom. By giving students a set amount of hours they must log on-line at school they are preparing this child to be responsible and meet expectations. Instead of facing a parent's wrath at how seriously their education is to them, they will face a serious consequence to their academic grades as well. For students planning to advance with higher education down the road, this may be a huge motivator for them to stay on track and really focus on their schoolwork.

Another thing offered by the cyber charter program is the ability to socialize. Traditionally with homeschooling there were groups the parents could join and meet up with to do activities . With cyber charter they encourage participation in extracurricular activities and interaction with teachers.

Cyber charter seems like a nice option to consider or research if you're undecided between a public school setting and a private home school environment. Parents are able to watch the student's progress and check things on the computer to make sure the student is following through with their schoolwork. At the same time, the parent gains some independence from being tied to a set amount of time researching, studying, planning, and implementing a satisfactory program. Cyber charter as you can see has many advantages and disadvantages. Objectively speaking this article was meant to inform you of the things that cyber charter offers and brings to the table in the buffet of education. Ultimately, each parent will be left to decide if this is the right option for their family or not.
