A person that has just been diagnosed with diabetes will look for information on the diabetic diet. The information is confusing and most of the time will not give the exact number of carbs to eat. The reason for this is everybody's body is different and everybody has a different amount of carbs and calories that will work for their body.
The doctor is the best person to ask how many carbs a person can have as a diabetic. The reason you want to ask a doctor is because the doctor will figure out how many calories a body needs and how much carbs the specific person's body can handle. Diabetics also need to go to the doctor before they go exercising! Exercise may be important, but when a person has diabetes he or she may not be able to exercise in certain manners. For example, some diabetics will get low blood sugar from exercising, but other diabetics will get high blood sugar from doing the exact same exercises.
Most diabetics will need to eat between 180 and 250 carbs a day. If a diabetic can figure out how many carbs he or she is eating by eating whatever they want, the diabetic can design their own diet that he or she will be able to live with.
The most important thing about being diabetic is to eat small meals more often. The reason a diabetic needs continuous carbs is to keep their body functioning properly without any spikes of high and low sugar. Most diabetics try to stay around 30 carbs a meal if they are eating small meals six or more times a day.
When a diabetic is picking their carbs they should try to eat healthy. The reason most diabetics stray from their diet is they cannot follow their diet. There are two reasons for this. The diabetic cannot figure the diet out or the diabetic does not like the foods that he or she is eating and is treating the diabetic diet like a diet and not a lifestyle.
Most people are creatures of habit. If a person that is a diabetic is a junk food junkie, there is not much hope he or she is going to be eating salads every night. On the other hand, the diabetic does not want to cut out all their carbs anyway or they will have sugar lows. That is why the diabetic diet needs to be followed every day. The same amount of carbs need to be eaten every day.
A diabetic that cannot bring himself or herself to eat healthy foods every day should try to concentrate on the number of carbs he or she eats. It is easier to count the carbs and stick to the diet if a diabetic is eating what he or she craves as well. This may not be the best for your body, but it is better than ditching the diet altogether.
This information is from my husband's personal doctor, my father-in-law's doctor, and from our experience with the diabetic diet. My husband was allowed 250 carbs a day. We found after a while it was hard to get to the 250 carbs. My husband is not the healthiest eater so I made him the deal he could eat whatever he wanted up to 250 carbs and from then on he had to eat lettuce. He stuck to his individualized diet plan and his A1C levels over the past ten years have continued to stay at 6.1. My father-in-law is allowed 200 carbs a day and he is on the insulin shots. It all depends on your own body.
