Understanding Your Dog's Allergies

Marlyn Lopes
It is common knowledge that millions of people suffer from allergies each year. Some knowledge that is not quite as common, your dog can also suffer from allergies. A dog can actually be allergic to many of the same things as their human companions.

As a human, if you have suffered from allergies in your life you are fully aware of this discomfort you feel during a reaction. The problem with an allergic reaction in dogs is they have no way of actually telling their owner's that something is wrong. Instead, as the caregiver of a dog it is our responsibility to look for sings of an allergic reaction in your dog.

The severity of an allergic reaction in our canine companions can also vary as much as they do in us. The reaction could be a mild one with slight irritation or a severe one that needs medical attention from a licenced veterinarian. Sometimes as an animal owner we can overlook the symptoms simply because we are busy tending to other things. Although we do this, it doesn't make it right. After all, would you dismiss your child if he or she was telling you they have a rash that is itchy or would you look at it?

You should take the same measures with your dog as you do your child. If you notice your dog is itching a lot it is likely he or she either has fleas or is having an allergic reaction to something. Some dogs are actually allergic to the saliva from a flea. This can cause your dog to itch uncontrollably after a flea has taken a bite of them.

Dogs can also be allergic to ingredients in their food. Some dogs can not tolerate wheat products in their food. This makes it important for you to stick to the same diet for your dog once you find the food that works best for him or her.

The possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to possible allergies your dog could suffer from. Knowing what your dog has eaten, been around or products that have been used on your dog is the best way for you to be able to pinpoint what the reaction could be from.

Here are a few signs to look for to determine if your dog is having an allergic reaction to something.

Sneezing

Coughing

Itching

Difficulties breathing

Now that you know what to look for and how to determine the cause for an allergic reaction you can better care for your dog's overall health. Once you have concluded the cause of the reaction you can begin taking steps to avoid the discomfort for your dog in the future.
