Understanding the Enemy: Online Trolls, Stalkers, Creeps, and How to Lose Them

Jesse Mathewson
All of us have experienced the trolls, stalkers, creeps, and internet zombies. While some of us may have fun with this, there are those of us who may also decide enough is enough. We end up changing our email address's and names used. I have come up with an action plan for these wonderful parts of our online life.

1. Learn to recognize the trolls, stalkers, creeps, and internet zombies before they overrun your blogs or articles with inane comments. To do this properly you should check the comments, a little bit of dissention in the comments are a good thing, however, too much can drive solid reader bases away.

2. When receiving emails or comments that you may reply to remember, think, than act responding before you have fully thought through the consequences can have dire results. In some cases, internet zombies have been known to continue plodding right on through years of blogs or articles simply to find "something" to use in their slow but sure attempts at converting you.

3. Do not ever directly attack the troll, stalker, creep, or internet zombie. Instead, use carefully laid traps to allow them the ability to terminate themselves. Unfortunately because internet zombies and trolls have relatively small brains several direct hits from their own guns rarely stop them completely however, it can slow them down.

4. Try not to acknowledge that they are alive and functioning if they continue to remain that way. The fastest way to lose a troll, stalker, creep, or zombie is to ignore that it is real.

5. Moreover, in the last resort if you must, block them, erase all of their comments, and ignore every single idea that they may exist. This works almost as well as a mini-tactical nuke and is far less messy in the end.

Therefore, you have just experienced my personal guide to terminating internet trolls, stalkers, creeps, and zombies. Remember, while someone may claim they hate your work, the mere fact that they read it counters that idea. So for all my loyal and wonderful readers...thanks and keep reading!

Great info. Like Maria, I rarely have to delete comments. Even if they disagree with my article and are even a bit attacking, I often leave those as well, unless they are downright inappropriate, vulgar, or something of that sort.

I don't have to delete TOO many comments, thank goodness. Always nice to see you here, Jesse. :)

I've experienced this...you are right! I made the mistake of bantering back & forth with one of them here, which only encouraged him. I had to put in a request to block him completely, not just from that article. Now - has anyone else started getting PM's from unknown AC members that just have links to other websites and nothing else?

    I appreciate your comments!

I was lured here like a zombie who catches the faint scent of brains upon the winter breeze by Mike Hatz' Facebook link to your article. I second his opinion and am going to have to go read up on some of your other stuff. I have always destroyed the markings of trolls, zombies, etc. on my sites with extreme prejudice and will continue to do so. It's my kingdom, and I love being a ruthless dictator. Excellent article.

Dude, to call you "brilliant" would be an understatement! This is awesome, and I have bookmarked it, too! I have had to deal with these nuts, too, and I best deal with them by flushing their drivel away like the crap that it is! I am also Facebooking this'n, too!
