Understanding Focalin Side Effects

According to Mosby's 2008 Nursing Drug Reference, Focalin, (Dexmethylphenidate), is a type of Ritalin. Focalin is a central nervous system stimulant used in treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. It is prescribed to children six years of age and older, and is administered in oral tablet form, or oral extended release capsule form. The usual dosages are 2.5mg, 5mg, and 10 mg. Focalin is only available by a prescription from your doctor, and should only be taken by the individual for whom it was prescribed. While ADHD can be stressful for the child and the family, all treatments should be considered before trying drug therapy.

Focalin has been shown to improve attention span, concentration, emotional control, and reduce restless or overactive behavior. Some of the more common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite, stomach pain, and depression. Discuss all the medications that you are taking before beginning Focalin treatment.

Your doctor or pharmacist can inform you about what over the counter pain medications to take for headaches. Antacids may alter the release of Focalin in its extended release form. Sipping warm soda and eating a few saltines may calm the upset stomach. If your child loses his or her appetite, try tempting them with smaller meals more often, rather than the usual three times a day. Be sure to sit down if you are experiencing dizziness as a result of taking Focalin. A cold towel on the back of the neck may help ease the faint, lightheaded feeling.

If the side effects persist or worsen, you may want to discuss other medications for ADHD with your physician. Some of these are Listol, Adderall, Strattera, and Concerta. Some natural remedies can be considered like counseling, social skills training, diet and exercise, or parental skills training. As always, your doctor will advise you on the best possible course of action.

Some of the more serious side effects reported with Focalin are rash, chest pain, facial swelling and suicidal thoughts. If you or your child experience any of these it is important to seek medical attention immediately. In some studies, this medication has been linked to Tourrettes Syndrome, Alcohol or drug abuse can increase the occurrence of depression.
