Understanding Ovulation

Mandy Hill
Many times, women decide they want to get pregnant, and they just go for it. That is great for the first little bit, but then they decide they aren't getting pregnant so there has to be a reason. There is a reason. In fact, there can be many reasons, but one thing is for sure; In order to get pregnant, you need to understand ovulation. This is what you will find here.

Ovulation is when your ovaries produce an egg (or two.) This is important because in order to get pregnant, you have to time intercourse around the time there will be an egg to fertilize. There is a lot of confusion about when ovulation actually occurs, because it changes from woman to woman. A general rule of thumb is to find the length of your cycle. This is from day one of your period to day one of your next period. Once you have that number, subtract fourteen from it. This will be around the time you ovulate. The most common mistake women make is believing that ovulation occurs around the fourteenth day of her cycle. This is only true of a woman with a twenty-eight day cycle. In all actuality, ovulation occurs fourteen days before you start your next period.

During a woman's cycle, she will have a period, her uterine lining will begin building again, and she will ovulate. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining will begin to shed again, which starts your next period. If the egg is fertilized, it plants itself in the uterine wall and a baby begins forming. Shortly after (around 14 days) you will begin releasing the hormone that will give you those two beautiful pink lines on that pregnancy test. Knowing when you ovulate can be tricky, so there are at home ovulation predictor kits that can help. They can help you determine your most fertile days, helping you time intercourse around your ovulation. These ovulation predictor kits (OPK's) can be found at most any grocery or drug store for a reasonable price.

Trying to conceive can become frustrating very quickly. Don't give up. Read about your cycle, ovulation, and pregnancy and relax. The more you think about it, the longer it will take. At the same time, be sure you are well educated about becoming pregnant. Sometimes simple things can be the difference in becoming pregnant soon and having to wait numerous months.
