Power outages can result from man-made or natural disasters that can cause blackouts and even rolling brownouts across several areas and locations. Since power grids are all interconnected, a problem with one power plant can cause rippling effects to others causing a wave of darkness across a town, city or state. With a solar power backup generator, you can have sustainable electricity coming from a source that is off the grid.
The Major Components of a Solar Power Backup Generator
Solar energy systems are becoming very popular as homes and businesses start to embrace green technology and harness renewable sources of energy. Residential and commercial solar power backup generator systems have been developed that can deliver reliable and uninterrupted source of energy with only an initial cost involved and no recurring expenses typical in standard sources of energy coming from utility companies.
A solar power backup generator makes use of a solar power panel of various size and capacity depending on the targeted output for the generator. The system consists of the solar panels, a chargeable high-capacity battery, a charge controller and an inverter. The following are the functions of each component.
1. Solar Panels: consists of photovoltaic (PV) cells made from crystalline silicon solar panels that have a molecular structure that allows the effective conversion of solar energy into direct current or DC power. These panels have a transparent glass surface structure sandwiching the silicon cells in an ethyl vinyl acetate or EVA encapsulant. The whole structure is framed in aluminum for strength and rigidity.
2. Battery: a solar power backup generator stores the produced electrical current in a battery bank similar to car batteries but is designed for deeper use and frequent cycling. During solar power collection, some of the converted electrical power are used directly in whatever appliances or heating systems that require power. The excess electrical energy are stored in the batteries, which are then activated at night time.
3. Charge controller: a charge controller protects the batteries by automatically regulating the charge flowing into the battery banks. Its functions also include regulating the solar charge current as well as providing low battery protection for the solar power backup generator system.
4. Inverter: solar panels convert solar energy into direct current or DC, however this type of current cannot be used directly by most appliances and heating systems in a home. These tools and equipment require AC or alternating current. The inverter converts the generated DC into usable AC before it is distributed from the output system.
A good solar power generator can be useful not only during power outages, but regular use can help minimize your energy costs by utilizing a free and renewable source of energy.
