Understanding PayPal

Frequently Asked Questions About PayPal

Heather Shockney
There have been many questions lately on PayPal. What exactly is PayPal and how do I sign up? PayPal has been around since 1998. It was used for paying for items won on the auction site EBay. PayPal offers a real time payment option. They have over 100 million user accounts and have been the recipient of 20 awards for their technical abilities. They are the biggest company that deals with on line payments. Many on line companies choose to use PayPal for paying their employees such as Associated Content. This allows for fast payments and not having to deal with mailing checks and such. You might be wondering how you can get your own PayPal account, I am going to provide the answers to this and many other frequently asked questions about PayPal.

How do I get a PayPal account? This is very simple go to www.paypal.com. Now click on the button that says Sign up Now. It will take you to a page where you can select what type of account you want. Personal, premier, or business accounts are the choices you have. We will discuss the differences later on. After you choose which type of PayPal account you want to sign up for and you choose the country you live in you will click on the next button. This page will ask for all of your personal information as well as allowing you to create a user name and password for your PayPal account. You will have to read PayPal's security agreements and agree to them to move on any further. Now you will be sent a confirmation email to the account you specified, you must click on the link in the email to continue setting up your PayPal account. Once you verify your email with PayPal they will want you to verify your account. This is an important step, it lets others know you are who you say you are and they will feel more comfortable with doing business with you. To verify your account you will simply enter your bank account information. Then PayPal will deposit some change into your account in two separate amounts. Once this is done you will enter the amounts of the deposits on the PayPal site. You will now be able to pay for items through PayPal by using your bank account. Also if you are paid through PayPal you can transfer the money to your bank account.

Is my PayPal account safe? This is a question that gets asked a lot. Everyone is worried about on line safety these days. PayPal offers complete protections against unauthorized charges. They never give your bank account or credit card number to anyone you are sending money. They also have a secure on line site to protect you while you are managing your PayPal account.

How do I get paid using PayPal? The company paying you will need your PayPal account email address. Then they will send the money to your PayPal account. You will receive an email saying that you have gotten money in your account. Now you can use the money in the PayPal account to make purchases on line or you can have the money transferred to your banking account.

What are the differences in the personal, premier and business accounts? This is a great question; first we will start with the personal PayPal account. With the personal account it's free to send money, add money, transfer to your bank account, and receive money from another PayPal account. If you wish to receive payments from credit cards you have a limit of five per 12 months. They also charge you a 4.9 % fee along with a .30 cent fee per transaction.

The premier and business account are very similar. They are free for sending, adding, and transferring money. They charge a 1.9-2.9% fee when receiving money from a PayPal account or a credit card. They also charge a .30 cent fee per transaction. There is no limit to the amount of transactions you can do a month with the upgraded PayPal accounts. A great benefit to the premier and business PayPal account is the ability to have a debit card for your account. There is no need to transfer the money you can use a Master Card debit card the same as you would any other credit card. You can also earn 1 percent of what you spend back. Any charges you make with the PayPal debit card that you don't have to enter your pin are qualified to get the one percent back.

The business account allows you to operate under your company name. You are able to accept all payment types as well. They have access to a call center 7 days a week should they need any assistance with their PayPal accounts.

If you are using the account to be paid by a company like Associated Content then a personal account will be fine. Unless you wish to have the debit card then you will need to upgrade to the premier account. I have had my PayPal account for 6 years and have never had any problems with it. I love the convenience the account offers me. I have upgraded to the premier account to have the debit card, which make the PayPal account even better. I don't have to wait while money is transferred from my PayPal account to my banking account. If you have any other questions about PayPal, contact them through the Website. They are very helpful.

Paypal sucks. They froze my account because one of the representatives was snooping around in my account because i had called to inquire about my debit card status. Bc it was in my companys name instead of my name they froze it. Good thing NO money was in there.

I don't understand. When you say it charges a .30 cent fee per transaction and a 4.9% fee (in this case if you have a personal account) per transaction but it says sending, adding, transfering, and recieveing money is all free??? So is it free to get money from AC or does paypal charge that money???

And all you people who leave comments like "It's amazing not everyone understands paypal!" are ridiculous. Why are you even reading the article? How were you born understanding paypal.

This was an excellent article. It is really weird - there are a lot of people who have no idea what paypal is. Even those who "get" ebay. Weird. But this was a really great article explaining it!

I have had nothing but problems with PayPal's "customer service". They are snotty and give out false information. But I have to use PayPal to get paid from here.

Good information. It's hard to believe that not everyone knows about PayPal, but it's true, they don't.
