Understanding and Preventing Nausea During Pregnancy

Amanda Dyar
More than half of all pregnant women have a small amount of nausea during the first trimester of pregnancy. For the majority of women this nausea typically subsides by the second trimester of pregnancy. Although with some women, nausea and vomiting can last the full 12 weeks of pregnancy. The exact reason of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is unidentified, but it is thought to be connected to the enhancement of hormone levels that take place during early fetal development. There are a few things that you can do to prevent nausea. There are ten steps that you can take during pregnancy to reduce or prevent nausea. These steps can prevent nausea from even occurring or can reduce existing nausea.

The first thing when you wake up is to get up slowly and than sit on the bed for a few minutes before attempting to stand. During pregnancy movement often worsens nausea. The second best thing for nausea is to eat some crackers early in the morning. Having a full tummy at all times can ease nausea. The third thing to do is eating five or six meals a day instead of three large ones will also reduce nausea. The fourth and most important step is to always remember not to let your stomach get empty. The fifth step would be to eat foods that are easy to digest and are bland. Bland foods are the best foods for someone who is pregnant and who is suffering from nausea. The sixth step to avoid or prevent nausea is to avoid fatty foods. You should though consume snacks such as peanut butter and nuts that are high in protein. The seventh step would be to keep hydrated. The number one cause of nausea is usually dehydration and can worsen existing nausea. It is important to drink a lot of fluids during the day such as water and Gatorade. The eighth step would be to avoid smells that bring on the onset of nausea and try to get as much fresh air as possible. The ninth step would be to try to lower stress with relaxing activities. Stress can onset the effects of nausea so it is helpful to take a walk or stroll to calm yourself and this also gives you fresh air.

The most important action and the tenth step for pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting is to keep away from odors, tastes, and other behaviors that activate nausea. If you experience severe nausea and vomiting it can be a symptom of a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum which is extreme vomiting during pregnancy. If your vomiting is severe, your health care provider can perform tests on your blood and urine to confirm any unknown medical conditions. If the case involves severe vomiting than your doctor may use other treatments to ease it. You could take medication to reduce nausea and vomiting, hospitalization, intravenous fluid treatment, and/or fasting in order to slowly introduce food into your diet. Most women suffering from pregnancy-connected nausea and vomiting recuperate entirely without any problems. Women with mild to modest vomiting frequently have less weight gain during early pregnancy. Your physician is the top source of information for uncertainties related to your medical condition. There are never two patients precisely alike and suggestions can vary from one individual to another, it is essential to seek direction from a provider who is familiar with your individual circumstances.
