While there is all type of effort being made to reduce the cost of the manufacturing processes involved, the simple fact is, it will be a long time before solar panels and windmills are available at your local hardware store. In fact, anyone hoping to purchase a solar panel to power their home is required to jump through all manner of hoops in order to do so. Installation is even more difficult, with fragile products and expensive fasteners that make do-it-yourself installation almost impossible.
So, if the technology is not quite ready for prime time, why is the United States government still pushing the renewable energy sources, rather than drilling for oil? As history will teach you, politicizing an argument is the best way to ensure that nothing gets done. Always remember that politicians are self-serving individuals and will always look after their own interests before those of the people. The cheerleading that comes out of Washington is largely due to the fact that this type of attitude makes politicians more popular with the people, not because there's any realistic technology available to provide renewable energy in the form of solar panels, windmills or wave generators.
Fortunately, independently of politicians, private markets and renewable energy resources are conducting all manner of research and effort into the concept of renewable energy in the form of wave generators, windmills and solar panels. The efforts to innovate in the area of solar energy technology have led to all manner of breakthroughs, many of which might make it to market in the near future. Windmills and wave generators have also seen a considerable amount of interest from the private markets.
The reason that the private market is so much more effective than the government and the political machine at forcing solar panels and other renewable energy sources through is that there is money to be made and a realistic business model can be extremely lucrative in the renewable energy market. Compared to the gossamer promises that come out of politicians, the private market is literally leaps and bounds beyond what is being discussed in Washington.
As private markets continue to see the profitability of renewable energy sources, you will very likely see innovations in the area of solar panels, wave generators and windmills that will make them far more affordable and easier to deploy in the near future.
