Understanding Sjogrens Syndrome

Sjogrens syndrome is often seen in conjunction with other autoimmune disorders. It was first discovered in 1933 by Dr. Henrik Sjogren. It is characterized by dryness of mucosal tissues in the eyes nose, mouth and genital area. Over 4,000,000 people in the US have this disease, according to the Sjogrens Syndrome Foundation! 9 out of 10 patients are women.

The production of saliva, tears and vaginal secretions are significantly diminished. Though usually seen in women after age 40, I developed it in my very early 30s. According to the Mayo Clinic, the main symptoms are:

Dry mouth

Itching, burning dry eyes that redden as it worsens.

Joint pain with swelling and stiffness

Fatigue

Persistent cough

Rashes and dry skin

It seems that there must be a sort of trigger such as a bacteria or virus to activate Sjogrens, in addition to a strong genetic factor. It is often seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or SLE, and is most commonly seen in women. As with most of the autoimmune disorders, Sjogrens can impact the entire body. But it is generally confined to the mucosa. It causes patients with Sjogrens to form cavities and experience damage to the lining of the mouth. Expert and regular dental care can help prevent much of this damage. Thrush and other yeast infections are seen in Sjogrens.

A sensitivity to light and corneal ulcerations are some of the issues a patient faces when Sjogrens affects the eyes. again regular eye care is key in keeping damage to a minimum. Sexual intercourse can be very painful for women suffering with Sjogrens. A frank talk with your doctor can help enormously. There are creams and other medications that can help make your intimate life enjoyable again. One warning: when dry thinning vaginal tissue is present, tearing can occur leading to infection. Don't let embarrassment cause you to suffer in silence. You are only hurting yourself.

Because Sjogrens can also attack your lungs, you need to pay attention to your body. Once your lungs are compromised, pneumonia and bronchitis can affect you. Routine bloodwork will monitor your heart, liver and kidneys for changes that could indicate these areas are being impacted. If you are thinking of becoming pregnant, ask your doctor about the antibodies and how this might impact your baby.

Sjogrens patients carry a higher risk of developing lymphomas, which involve the lymph nodes. Since, according to the Sjogrens Foundation, it can take up to 6 1/2 years to get diagnosed, being aware and vigilant about changes to your body is crucial. Rheumatologists are your first line of defense when dealing with this disease. There are medications that can be used to make your life significantly more comfortable. Drugs such as Restasis (Cyclosporine) and Lacrisert can ease the swelling and discomfort of dry eyes. Exovac and Salagin help reduce the discomfort and damage caused by dry mouth. In addition there are both OTC gels and creams that add needed moisture to your vaginal area. If these aren't doing the job, there are prescription strength products that will help you alot.

Sjogren's is a disease that needs much more public attention, impacting so very many of us across the US. If you feel you may be suffering with Sjogrens and have not been diagnosed, try and get a referral to a good rheumatologist. Don't wait until the damage gets so great, there's not much help to be given. Visit the Sjogrens Foundation site and make yourself aware of what it is and how to help. Those of us who have Sjogren's will thank you for caring.
