What is Teak?
Teak is a hardwood that is grown in the tropical forests of Asia in the monsoon regions. Teak is also grown, occasionally, on plantations. That means that there are actually two types of teak wood that can be used to build patio furniture. Teak wood from old forests and from trees that are over 100 feet tall is generally stronger, harder, and more desirable than what is grown on the plantations. This is called old growth teak. While old growth teak may be more desirable, it is also considerably rarer and thus a lot more expensive.
The new growth teak, or plantation grown teak, is grown in many tropical countries around the world. When harvested, the wood is kiln dried and treated. The result is teak wood that approaches the performance and durability of that old growth teak.
What are the Benefits of Teak?
Teak wood has a tight grain, which is why it makes a great material for boats. Those same traits also make it great as all weather patio furniture. The tight grain and large amounts of natural oil in teak wood mean that you can leave it out no matter what the weather is like. The wood is essentially bullet proof when it comes to whatever the climate may throw at it.
If you go with treated or varnished teak for your patio furniture, you will be getting furniture with a dark, rich color to it. Additionally, you will find that the wood will maintain that color. On the other hand, you may choose to go with an untreated teak wood. That type will hold up just as well, but will take on a gray patina and smooth texture. Either way, you will find that your teak furniture will stay beautiful and durable for many years through varying weather.
How do you Care for Teak Patio Furniture?
Teak furniture is easy to care for. Since it holds up well in weather, there is a not a lot that has to be done. In order to help your teak patio furniture last as long as possible, though, it is important to keep it clean.
Your teak furniture can be cleaned best with a simple mild detergent. If you do not have anything like that on hand, you can use soap and water to clean it. The only other maintenance that needs to be done is in the case that the grain begins to open. If that happens, then you must get it treated to keep water out of the interior of the wood.
Thought I may cost a little more than other types, teak furniture is more durable and more reliable than traditional patio furniture. So if you are in the market for patio furniture, take your new knowledge about this traditional material and hit the furniture stores.
