Understanding the Ten Commandments

Guy Siverson
I often here people talking about the 10 commandments.

Some say they have been done away with while others claim they are binding today.

Some say that we are in the age of grace while others think it important to follow these laws.

Some say they were nailed to the cross while others show that this was not the case.

The question is, can we reach a path to understanding the Ten Commandments today?

In pursuit of gaining a clearer understanding of this point lets first briefly review these commandments.

1. No other gods

2. No graven images

3. No taking Lord's name in vain

4. Remember the Sabbath

5. Honor father & mother

6. Do not kill

7. Do not commit adultery

8. Do not steal

9. Do not bare false witness

10. Do not covet

All of these seem reasonable to me, so why is it that some believe these commandments no longer pertain to our lives today?

John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

According to the above verse love has replaced the commandments. However a clear counter argument to this concept would be found in the following verse.

John 14:15
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Another point that some make is found in these following verses

Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Clearly love is the focus, but taking the above verses without including this one would be a mistake according to the view of some people.

Matthew 22:40

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Apparently love is not a new way but rather the basis of the original 10 commandments in the first place. With that said, what is your own understanding the Ten Commandments process? Do they apply today or were they nailed to the cross when just was crucified?
