Understanding a Tummy Tuck

Ms. Marie
The decision to have surgery to change the appearance of the stomach is an important one because once you have the procedure you may not be satisfied with the results. Some people, most being women, are dead set on getting rid of their extra belly fat and sagging skin that they do not care what it takes, they just want it gone. This is not an extensive guide to understanding a tummy tuck, it is just the basics.

What is a tummy tuck

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and stubborn fat in the stomach area; it also tightens the abdominal muscles. It can get rid of flabby, loose, skin, and extra fatty deposits that are unresponsive to regular dieting and exercise.

First, a consultation is done with the surgeon. It is important to answer all questions honestly. Certain tests will make sure that you are healthy enough to under-go the procedure safely. Who is it for? Anyone who is healthy enough to have the procedure, has a protruding stomach, or a waistline that is disproportionate may benefit from this type of cosmetic surgery.

Possible candidates for a tummy tuck include women who have had a baby, adults who are obese or extremely overweight with excessive flabby skin and stubborn fat deposits in their midsection. Alternatively, someone that is a healthy weight, but has a potbelly that they feel uncomfortable about may benefit from a tummy tuck.

What is involved in the surgery

An incision is made along the lower stomach close to the pubic hairline from hip to hip, and then a second opening is made to free the navel from its surrounding tissue. The skin, which is separated from the abdominal wall, will expose the underlying muscles along the stomach; these muscles are your vertical abdominal muscles.

The muscles are pulled together and then stitched; this is done to tighten weak muscles. As a result patients have a slimmer waist, and an abdominal wall that is firmer. After the muscles are tightened, the next step is to pull the skin down over the stomach, the excess skin is "tucked" away. Finally, the belly button is reattached in its new position.

There are two types of tummy tucks. The full tummy tuck as explained briefly above, and the mini tummy tuck, which is less invasive. A mini tummy tuck will have a smaller scar because there is only one incision made on the lower stomach. There is no need for an incision around the navel area. Also, there is no reason to reshape or tighten any muscles.

Mini tummy tucks may only require local anesthesia, and the patient can go home the same day. This procedure is less intrusive and it is normally recommended for those who do not have excess flabby skin; it is usually best for flattening a lower paunch.

Recovery period

After a tummy tuck there will be pain, and swelling. Your body will need time to heal, and you should not try to do anything that your doctor tells you to avoid. Caring for your wound is vital, by keeping it clean you can prevent an infection, and help speed up the natural healing process. Rest and only recommended exercise is extremely important while recovering. You will assist your body in its healing process by following your post-operative instructions. With time, you will begin to see your new shape revealed because you will have a flatter stomach, firmer muscles, and a new self-image.

Remember this is only a guide to understanding a tummy tuck, be sure to visit and consult with a professional who can answer all of your questions.
