Unemployment Benefits "Extenders" Bill Failed in the Senate

"Dead on Arrival" - Senate to Promptly Introduce New Unemployment Extension Bill

S Gardner
Unable to get the 60 votes necessary to pass the unemployment benefits "Extenders" bill on Wednesday without paying for it, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) got permission to bypass what would have been a failed cloture vote (to end debate) and to move directly to a "just for show" vote on the bill.

The vote failed, as expected, with a count of 45 for and 52, including 11 Democrats, against. A new bill, scaling back the $141 billion dollar price tag and providing ways to pay for more of the provisions like the unemployment benefits extensions rather than add $81 billion to the deficit, should be introduced immediately and is expected to have a greater chance of passing the Senate. The new unemployment benefits extension bill will then have to go back to the House.

Republicans have already introduced legislation that would cover the cost of extending unemployment benefits for the millions of Americans desperately waiting for a bill to pass. These measures would help the unemployed to survive while also helping to protect the broader economy by avoiding additional national debt. (Read "Senate Still Seeking 60 Votes" ... for more information on the parties' positions.)

While some Democrats are clearly now seeing the wisdom of this, the more left leaning Dems, like Senator Majority Leader Reid, have seemed intent on remaining on their destructive course of spending the nation into permanent collapse. Many believe the Democrats may now have additional political reason to stop extending benefits to the unemployed and to try to blame it on the Republicans. (Read "Why the Democrats May Not Want to Extend Your Benefits")

The table is set, now, for a better bill that will help those of us who are unfortunately dependent on unemployment for our survival while also sparing the nation any additional debt.

Tell Congress to pass the new bill extending unemployment benefits and to pass the Republicans' measures to pay for the unemployment benefits extensions. (For a comprehensive list of contact information for our legislators, see: "Tell Congress to Pass Tier 5 ... )
