Unemployment Benefits "Extenders" Bill Another Step Closer to Passing

Talks Continue; The Unemployment Benefits Extensions Provisions Could Be Voted on Separately

S Gardner
The Senate seems to be moving, one step at a time, closer to passage of a bill extending unemployment benefits for millions of hurting and frightened Americans.

After weeks of wrangling and a series of failed votes, the unemployment benefits "extenders" bill was rumored to be stalling in the Senate. However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has confirmed today that talks will go on and that they may be making some progress.

As of this writing, there is finally talk on both sides of the aisle of bifurcating the unemployment benefits extension provisions from the broader "extenders" bill. This was done last week for the "doctor fix" sections which went on to pass by unanimous consent of both parties.

Further, while a cloture vote on a modified version of the unemployment benefits "extenders" bill failed by just four votes last week, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W. Virg) was absent for that vote but will vote "yay" when needed. And now, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn) has also agreed to change his vote, at least for cloture, to a "yay" vote should his vote be necessary. As Lieberman had been staunchly against this bill without greater progress being made toward reducing it's impact on the budget and deficit, it is uncertain whether his agreement to a yes on cloture will translate to a yes on the bill. Still, it can be counted as at least a sign of softening.

Ultimately, both of these votes as well as two others from the Republican side will be needed to pass the bill. The Democrats and several liberal interest groups in Maine have been putting pressure on moderate "Rino" Republicans Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to get them to acquiesce. These four votes could put the bill over.

But more ideally, if the Senate agrees to pull the unemployment benefits extension provisions from the broader bill and can come to agreement on a way to fund it, the vast majority of Senators from both sides of the aisle should be enthusiastic to vote for it. The Republicans have repeatedly stated their desire to fund unemployment extensions and have even provided amendments showing the way to fully fund even the larger bill. (Read "Democrats Block Benefits Extension") Perhaps the Democrats will be more willing to employ some of those deficit reducing strategies to the bifurcated issue.

Should that happen, and the unemployment benefits extension finally pass through Congress, millions of Americans, myself included, will breath a collective sigh of relief.

It would be different if there were actually jobs out there! It's preety sad when even the "temp" services aren't even hiring! I guess our officials are just too busy worrying about helping so many other countries out rather than helping out the people in their own country who really need it! I've been having to go to food pantries for food, something that I've never had to do before! I also have to hide my car since I'm late on my $300.00 car payments that I can't afford now, which I do need so I can look for a job, and I even had to move in with my daughter and her family! i know that I'm definitly not the only person that is hurting and I do pray for all of us out there that's lives have all been shattered because of our own officials! It just shows how much they do not care about any of us, but they just want to spen their time on "vacationing" while all of us are worrying about keeping food on our tables, or having a roof over our heads, and trying to get our bills paid!!

I am a victim of the unemployment dilemma, and have exhausted tiers at this point, with no job opportunities in sight as a resident of Florida. To say I'm "scared and confused" is an understatement - as I have lost my home to foreclosure, and my health insurance unable to be funded.....WHAT ARE WE TO THINK ABOUT OUR POLITICIANS LACK OF UNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE CRITICALITY OF THIS SITUATION???

Sign me "Dismayed, disappointed, and downright angry!!"

jennifer you are right about Cobra. I dont have that but I think people should have that too. I have been out of work since Jan 2010 and i have gotten my last check today. Its hard to fine a job and when you go and look for a job and send in your resume you dont hear anything. There are 5 people for each job and the gov said that the jobs are out there but they dont know that to many people are trying for one job. Then you hear the companys dont want to hire a person that is unemployed too. Im 40 and I have a child and if I lose my place then im homeless. If that happens to to many people then all the poeple will be on welfare and then more money will be on gov system. We are all looking for work living on what we get with Unemploymnet isnt much and it sucks. I just hope that they pass it. And when it comes to Nov alot of the people on the congress wil be losing jobs too. I hope that they do it and good luck to u Jennifer

This is total BS. They should have passed this bill months ago. Can you imagine if THEY actually needed the unemployment benefits? The bill would be passed in ten minutes. Honestly, most of these scumbags really need a life lesson.

ALL issues should be able to stand on their own merit! Glad to hear this is being bifurcated.
Thanks for keeping us up to date! You have the best information on the WEB!

Separating the UI extension from HR 4213 makes sense. And it makes more sense to add back the COBRA reduction to that bill!
