Unemployment Benefits Extension '" a 2010 Desire by Jobless in America

The "Unemployment Benefits Extension" Does Very Little to Solve the Core Problem

Meg G.
The unemployment benefits extension is all that much closer to passage. Clearing the 60 vote hurdle needed to end a republican led filibuster, the measure is expected to be voted on today and sent to Obama to become law by the end of the week. If successful, the benefits extension will allow people to resume receiving benefits under the tiers 1-4 of unemployment.

Many are confused. The "unemployment benefits extension" really isn't an extension at all - unless you consider that under the best of circumstances, only 26 weeks, or 6 months of benefits are available to any worker. However, under the Bush Administration and into the current administration four tiers of benefits were created.

Two tiers are for everyone, and the third and fourth tiers are only for the states with the worst unemployment rates. The bill doesn't add a tier 5, and it doesn't allow everyone access to the third and fourth tiers. So, really, this is only an extension of time to file.

Those who have used up all 99 weeks of benefits, the so-called "99ers" find little relief in the legislation, only that it allows their friends who have not exhausted benefits access to theirs.

A true benefits extension is desired in order to make it through this recession. It only makes sense; There are millions of unemployed workers in America - many of them long term. However, in June the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that only 313,000 non-farm jobs were added to company payrolls across America. This did very little, if anything, to help the situation.

We hear that "initial jobless claims have decreased" ... duh. They are going to decrease. There are less jobs now more than ever, and there's going to come a point where the economy has lost so many jobs, that there's no where to go but up. It wouldn't be too far fetched to say we are almost at that point.

The unemployment benefits extension bill needs to be passed, and HR4213 likely will. However in order to truly help Americans and get past all the craziness, we need to pass a true extension.

Passing such a measure will be hard. If the Senate was almost unwilling to pass an unemployment benefits extension for an extension of time to file, getting them to approve additional weeks of benefits will be almost impossible.

Don't give up - the only way to make change is to demand it.

Americans (those not making over $250k per year) you all voted AGAINST yourselves by voting republ (or under cover repubs by way of the alleged 'tea party'. Now, you are getting a taste of what the repubs plan for you, as everyday Americans.

Come on! Preventing kids from having an ok Christmas and food on the table- maybe continue living indoors....as a political gambit?? Really??

Vote anti-repub next election folks...unless you are wealthy or rich, the repubs' people.

Don;t be stupid again like during the last election.

What kind of a monsters are these Democrats and Republicans who choose not to help the unemployed families in need.? These politicians make several thousand dollars a week and they want to deny American families in dire need of a few hundred dollars a week because they can not agree how it should be paid? Work something out ! Families are on the brink of disaster! There is NO reason on earth to deny help to these families. They did not create this problem. The rich elite fat cats on wall street did and they still get million dollar bonuses but the unemployed get nothing? What has this country become? I served six years in the military, worked and paid taxes all my life until six months ago when my employer closed his doors due to the recession. Now that I ask for some help from the country I served I am told NO! These politicians dig their heels in with a my way or the highway stance bickering over the deficit vs stimulus money while families suffer. Instead of working to find a co

Here we go again the GOP is delaying final vote on extension. While they play politics with our lives a family gets evicted. A home gets its electricity or gas turned off and will cost more money to get turned back on. A child misses a meal etc.

To everyone that is on unemployment and is responding to these blogs. We can sit in front of our computers and complain. That might make you feel a little better to let off some steam but the Senators that are blocking the extension benefit bill are not reading these blogs. They don’t care. What we can do is take action. Start calling every Senator that is blocking this bill. Most of these guys opposing this bill are millionaires, so you can see why they don’t care. To find your Senators contact info go to Senate.gov. Once you get their DC office number and fax number blast their phones with calls everyday. Some of them are saying unemployment benefits is just an incentive to not look for work and have even said we were lazy. So call and c

The problems with employers these days is that they want perfection and they will pass on applicant after applicant till they think they found one then after just two weeks they fire that person and start searching again. The prefect little slave. That's what all employers want.

  • Erin7/21/2010

This is ridiculous. I am a single mom who has worked sometimes three jobs to support my kids. I have an education and great job history...that is what it is history. I now am denied benefits because I have been out too long....we are the ones who need them!

Unlike the scandinavian countries ours doesn't consider people the most important thing in the country. You know how it is AIG, bank of america etc. The republican rich with a license to steal from the people. You remember them when you can no longer work for their companies or they no longer need you they toss you on the trash heap.
The republicans need to buy some compassion and empathy. If they needed the unemployment extension it would appear as if by magic. So the words "useless crooks" comes to mind

As for the temp agencies they should be outlawed. For any IDIOT who says if it wasnt for the temp agency i wouldn't have a job. WAKE UP STUPID the company that has you working for it would still need you, and you would be getting benefits. This is why so many americans are without health insurance, then after 89 days they let you go so they can ROB another poor soul who is trying to survive for 89 days!

  • Sam7/21/2010

The Republicans simply want to use the Stimulus Slush money to pay for this. Nothing wrong with that. When I get back to work, I sure don't want to pay extra taxes to pay off an even larger debt.
