Unemployment Benefits Extension Failed - What's Next for the Bill?

Millions of Unemployed Praying for Quick Action in the Senate

S Gardner
The Unemployment Benefits Extension bill failed for a third time in the Senate, leaving Senators on both sides of the aisle frustrated. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) continued to blame the Republicans for not caring about the people, while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) continued to assert that they were concerned about unemployment benefits extensions for the jobless but were also concerned about the cost and addition to the already staggering federal deficit that the overall "Tax Extenders" bill imposed. The Republicans offered ways to offset that cost, but the Democrats refused.

McConnell and the Republicans even offered on three different occasions to provide unemployment benefits extensions for 30 days while the larger bill was being completed using unallocated stimulus funds to pay for it, but Sen. Reid and the Democrats rejected all three offers. At this point, over a million jobless are now without assistance. Without an immediate passage of unemployment benefits extensions, an estimated two million Americans will have lost their unemployment benefits by July 10.

Frustrated with his inability to get the 60 votes necessary to move HR-4213 to the floor, Senator Harry Reid said he would set the bill aside until later in the summer.

But conscious of the desperation of the millions of jobless and hurting Americans, Senator Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) sent a letter to Reid, requesting that he allow the unemployment benefits provisions to be bifurcated from the larger bill and voted on immediately. Senator Snowe as well as many of the Republicans are said to be concerned about the unemployed and believe a vote on this stand-alone issue could succeed, much like the "Doctor Fix" that was passed late last week after being removed from the greater bill.

According to the SunSentinel.com, Judi Conti, a lobbyist for NELP (National Employment Law Project), an unemployment advocacy group said, "There is agreement across the aisles we want to keep these programs up and running. We need to move it as a standalone." She further indicated that the sense of urgency to get this done quickly was present throughout both parties.

With our unemployment benefits already cut off, many of us are already hanging by a thin thread, with hundreds of thousands more to follow each week. This is no time to let down. Please everyone, continue to contact your legislators and the media and make your voices heard on this matter. (For a complete comprehensive contact list of legislators and media contacts, click here.) Hopefully, our unemployment benefits will be renewed soon and the benefits we have missed so far will be given to us retroactively so we can survive - until we can find our jobs.

Their only thinking of themselves. I'm a single parent of four children on depend only on me to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I lost my job after 17 years an never received unemployment benefits until now. If he wait and sign that bill at the end of the summer my family will become homeless but I guess it doesn't bother those who feel their job is safe. We voted them in and we can vote them out.

I think Senator Harry Reid needs to trade places with an unemployed worker and see how he feels. If he is saying they will wait until the end of Summer. When he wants his votes I think we should wait until the election is over to vote on any of these Senators especially you Senator Reid. You need to put the bill back out there and pass it.

I have had to move out of my house, live with relatives just to make the payments with unemployment and all of a sudden a bunch of politicians who have a job couldnt care less. One wants to wait till late summer? well i guess he doesnt have to worry. I worked 22 years and got laid off. And am activelly seeking employment like millions of others. I am single so I dont have a husband to fall back on. Must be nice being in the senate and pretending to care but not really.

Now Senator Snowe is worried? How about showing that you really care by voting for the extension instead of sending a useless letter to Senator Reid. It only shows how stupid you are to think we can't see through that. YOU AND YOUR REPUBLICAN BUDDIES DON'T CARE!

  • tired of it!!!6/26/2010

people!!! they are going to try again… the reason it did not pass is the republicans!!! i watched everyday, and everyday i saw the democrats BEGGING the rep’s to pass this. they read HUNDREDS of letters to the republicans from people like you and i, who will have to move out of our homes. who wont be able to eat!! and the republicans DONT CARE!! NOT ONE REP VOTED YES!!! if you have a REPUBLICAN senator CONTACT them BEFORE its too LATE!! we one need TWO reps and we cant get ONE!! i looked and there are so many states with such a high unemployment rate with REPUBLICAN senators. they are suppose to work for YOU! LET THEM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!! believe it or not YOU ARE THEIR BOSS!! the democrats will tell you that all day. you can watch the meetings all day everyday on c-span 2. again we need JUST 2 REPUBLICANS to get a vote passed for us. if your senator is republican its VERY easy to call or write!! if you watch everyday its disgusting to see the democrats get up here and talk making c
