Unemployment Extension 2010: 99ers and Tier 5 Updates

Senate is Slated to Vote on HR 4213 This Week, but No Tier 5 in Sight

Meg G.
The 2010 unemployment extension bill is still mulling through Congress, and it's expected that it will be brought back to vote this week. This time, there will be a new face in the crowd, as the West Virginia Governor has chosen a replacement for the late Senator Robert Byrd. Carte Goodwin is the chief counsel for the governor and he will take Byrd's place and is expected to vote FOR the benefits extension bill.

There is still a lot of confusion over what is and isn't included with the measure. There are many following the "Tier 5 to Survive" movement who are very disheartened that Congress hasn't even brought a measure up to vote on a further extension of benefits beyond the former 99 weeks available.

The so-called 99ers are a group of people who have exhausted all the tiers 1-4 of emergency federal benefits available to them. The tiers add up to 73 more weeks to the unemployment. The 99ers claim that they need more time than this of benefits considering the meager job market and lacking job market.

The current bill only extends the time to file for the 1-4 tier of emergency federal benefits. The measure doesn't do anything to add tiers (a Tier 5, so to speak) to the availability of funds.

The Huffington Post reports that the legislation comes with a $33 billion price tag. Congress was in deadlock over how to fund the measure, with Republicans refusing to budge and desiring that the bill be paid with unused stimulus plan funds.

Democrats want to fund the bill using deficit spending and tax hikes, and it appears as if this is how the bill will be funded once it is passed.

The earliest that a measure will come up for a Senate vote will be on July 20, which is the same day that Carte Goodwin will be sworn in to his new post as West Virginia Senator.

With the exception of Ben Nelson from Nebraska, the measure is supported by all Democrats. All but two Republicans oppose it.

Although the unemployment benefits extension doesn't include a Tier 5, it's still a start. Something is better than nothing and perhaps passing this bill will pave the way for extra benefits down the road. It will be a hard sell to the Republican Senators who want to start controlling government spending. However, as unemployment grows more tiers of availability of funds may be the only way to keep people off the streets and in their homes.

99ers shouldn't lose hope. Hopefully, the measure will pass this week and the quest for additional benefits will become more feasible.

people have applied for jobs, but there aren't enough for the 27 million unemployed. I wish the house and the senate could pass unemployement extension for the 99ers this week. If the U.S is the most powerful country in the world, it should act like one and help the 99ers who have nothing to put on the table and to pay their bills.

There is nothing wrong for U.S to help other countries - Isn't it the superpower in the world. If indeed they are, they should act like one and help both challenged people in other countries and those living in the U.S.
Some republicans should be more empathy to help the 99ers as they are mostly the ones that killed the bill.

What are the 99ers supose to do if there is no tier 5 passed for us. we to have to make ends meet. Without having tier 5 passed for the 99ers, we will become homeless. I depended on the unemployment to help me pay my utilities. Please congress help us the 99ers, we need help too!

This is for Young Professional, YOU sir are a first class schmuck.
The degrees you mention, are the ones that cause the problems. Law degree gets us lawyers that write the laws NO ONE can understand, Finance degree, those are the greedy bastards of wall street that led to the DEPRESSION we are in, Accounting degree, those are the thieves that figure out the best way to beat the system. Engineering degree, not sure but are not they the ones that come up with all the ways to cut jobs from the market place?
So, SCHMUCK I look in the mirror every day, and I wonder how much longer I will be able to afford to keep that mirror.

The fat bellies of Congress need a break. I understand! I am, for the longest time, not proud to call myself an American. Christmas is on the way and I am sure that the "gluttony" of it all will justify a long recess for Congress. Those fat pigs! Best holiday wishes from a loyal unemployed taxpayer.

Freeze All Politicians' Wages Until Economy Is Fixed

If unemployment benefits for honest, hard-working, TAX-PAYING Americans need to be cut off to keep the deficit under control, then welfare benefits should also be cut off.

Likewise, all tax breaks should be eliminated, and all politicians' wages should be frozen until the economy is stable.

We’re all in this mess together.

The Obama Administration forgot the 99 ers who are the real chronic unemployed in the uS. The group have been permanently displaced from their jobs, usually over 45 years of age and a majority do not have marletable skills to be able to reenter the workforce. They will become homeless and or on some form of social welfare and will be lost forever unless something more is done to help them. Idle hands and idle minds will become the devils workshop. Obama didn't figure that if employment figures remain high there will be more and more people becoming 99ers. They will become the 21St century Bonus Marchers" and will start creating trouble in the US.

I too am sick of seeing the Obamas go on vacation. I voted for him and now wish I could take it back...and Ill go one more..I dont think all teachers deserve a raise. Do you realize the benefits and time off they have. They are only working 7 months per year..and they are not all good teachers. Quit crying or home schooling will take off even stronger.

I am a 99er and have to say that I lean towards not giving another extension. I personally know a husband and wife in Illinois who each recieve 540.00 per week in benefits. That is over $50,000.00 per yr and do not worry about working. If they are going to give another extension it needsf to be the same amount for ALL PEOPLE....sorry but no damn way should this amount be paid to anyone on a weekly basis.
