Unemployment Extension 2010: 99ers, Senate Vote, and Tier 5 Dreams

Today's the Day the Jobless Could Be Vindicated!

The unemployment extension 2010 bill is something that the 99ers have been keeping a close eye on. The 99ers are a grassroots group of long-term unemployed individuals who have already exhausted the four tiers of unemployment benefits available. The group desires a tier-5 benefit or an addition to the 73 weeks of federal checks.

The Senate has had enough difficulty with the bill going through Congress right now. It's said to cost some $33 billion, and will add to the nation's $13 trillion deficit. Republicans said that they wanted to "trim the fat" and try to stop overspending, and therefore are voting against the bill.

However, Senate democrats are expected to push the measure through today, as the addition of Carte Goodwin will give them the 60th vote needed to secure a victory. This is assuming that Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from Maine don't flip flop and go back with their party and vote against the bill.

The 99ers are watching closely, and any politician who stands in the way of passing the measure could pay a hefty price come November. This group wants to make sure that eventually legislation is passed that will give them another lifeline.

The job market is tough out there. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 6.8 million LONG TERM unemployed individuals alone in the United States. Also, 8.6 million Americans are involuntarily part time workers. Discouraged workers, or those who have stopped searching for a job only because they think that nothing out there is available to them, stands at 1.2 million.

In June, it was also announced that 313,000 non-farm jobs were added to the payrolls, and this was touted as a really good thing. However, considering the MILLIONS of Americans in need of work, the number just doesn't seem as rosy.

Numbers don't lie. As you can see our nation is in quite a predicament. Since those with jobs are taxpaying citizens, they should consider this: would you rather your hard earned tax dollars be used on Americans, or do you prefer that they be used on something else such as aid to another country? Passing the legislation is crucial, and will do a lot to help our economy survive.

i have been asking this question all the way up to the president. why is there no money for tier5 but always an abundance for welfare recipients and illegals?????

  • george7/22/2010

too many of us worked many years busting our butts to build this country. we are in need of a tier 5 not to live high on the hog like the politictans have on the taxes we have paid over the years but just to afford the basics to survive. if they are so worried about the deficit make all the foriegners that enjoy our tax free hospitality to pay right off the bat.what pisses me off is that we all have to bear the brunt of it when things go awry. thing is that we are all unemployed and looking for jobs that have been taken overseas or where employers pay a fraction of what they would pay in this country. illeagles are another problem we need the tier 5 to survive.
