Unemployment Extension 2010: Another Day Waiting for Benefits, but Checks Come Soon

Michigan, Nevada Have Two Very Different Methods of Processing Extension Payments

Meg G.
The unemployment extension has passed, and even though it doesn't offer a true extension of benefits, it's still better than no help at all. Since June 2, 2010 Americans have lost their unemployment benefits as their current tiers of benefits expire.

Until November 30, 2010 there will now be help for these individuals, but first and foremost they need their checks.

For many, assurance that the "check is in the mail" isn't enough. Each state will be different, as their unemployment boards are responsible for certifying that those who have applied for retroactive benefits are eligible for their claims.

In the state of Michigan, it is expected to only take two weeks to turn around the benefits. This is very quick for a state that is sure to be one of the states slammed hardest with requests for benefits. Michigan's unemployment rate is second only to that of Nevada.

Speaking of Nevada, their Web site indicates that claimants will get a letter from the state within seven to ten days of the bill's passage. These individuals are asked not to call the unemployment offices, instead to wait for their letter. The letter will then outline the next steps to take.

Assuming that the system set up in Nevada works flawlessly, you have to wait a week or two just to find out if you are, according to the state's records, eligible for extended unemployment benefits. Then, you follow instructions and wait for the checks.

If you experience a glitch with the system, as in you are eligible for benefits but don't receive a letter, you will have to wait at least a couple of weeks just to address the issue. This could increase your wait time significantly.

No system is perfect, but for many the help that they need may be weeks away. However, it's pertinent to be patient and refrain from calling your state's unemployment offices unless absolutely necessary. Check their Web sites for more information before calling. The more employees spend time on the phone talking to people trying to get an extension, the slower going it will be to get your checks.

The extension of unemployment benefits is only good until November 30, 2010. After this time, we will have to hope that another similar piece of legislation is passed in order for benefits to continue.

    @Me
    I got a check, but it wasn't due to the extension passing. It was due to not receiving my last check before june 12. I did receive my paperwork in the mail automatically, to file from june 12th, to the current date. I wouldn't even bother getting on the phone for any info, just do it all online. It is way faster to get processed and get your papers to fill out for out of work weeks.

    Kelly you got a check already? Spoke with them yesterday to iron out the online stuff (so I can file that way) and already have all of my claim forms sent in. The rep yesterday said she was going to pay me out for those weeks, and fix the computer issue. Still had issues today with the online edd system, I talked to a rep today again. She stated that they have not even gotten the green light to start mailing checks??? I wonder if I called again if I would get a different statement???

    Again, this is just a moment of exhaling for some, for now. There are many others who are not exhaling right now and we may be joining them and repeating this all over again in November!
