Unemployment Extension 2010: Benefits Are Closer; Tier 5 Still a Desire for 99ers

The Senate Voted to Stop a Filibuster, Making the Benefits Extension Move Forward. What About Tier 5?

Meg G.
The unemployment extension bill has been one of the biggest political items of 2010. The bill, which extends the time available to file for up to 73 additional weeks of unemployment benefits, is a lifeline to the long-term unemployed. Senate Republicans have been hesitant to support the measure, which adds $34 billion to the nation's deficit. Although it's not a good idea to spend money that the nation doesn't have most Americans are in support of doing so if it means helping their neighbors.

Yesterday, the Senate had the 60 votes needed to end the filibuster after the swearing in of Carte Goodwin, the replacement for the late Robert Byrd.

All this is great, as the unemployment benefits extension is now gaining speed and making its way through Congress. However, the bill does NOTHING for the individuals who have already exhausted the four tiers previously available to them.

Many people are confused; the "unemployment extension" really isn't that much of an extension at all. If it were, there would be at minimum an extension of tiers 3 and 4 to all states (currently, only the states with the most dire unemployment situation are eligible for all four tiers). Many people want an additional tier - a Tier 5 - to further allow them to have a paycheck while searching for a job.

The "Tier 5 to Survive" movement has been widespread, although politicians haven't responded with a bill. There are many who are doubtful if a true extension will ever be spoken about in Congress, as it was hard enough to even end the Republican-led filibuster of the bill.

Still yet...the benefits extension has not passed. All that has passed is a move to end the filibuster and allow the measure to be spoken about, debated, and moved through the house.

So much will ride on the decisions of the only two Republican Senators who moved to end the filibuster- Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Will they stick with that decision? Will everyone who voted to end the filibuster also vote for the extension?

Once the Senate passes the bill, it could become law by the end of the week; still, the unemployed will have to wait a couple additional weeks to begin receiving their checks again.

Wow, GM and other large companies are doing better now that they have gotten help, what about the little guy. Can I live with you, Congress what are you worried about? Millions of people asking for help from a country so high and mighty. We give to others before taking care of our own. Happy Holidays Congressman!

Why does this artical say there is no bill for 99's? Pretty stupid.
If they don't pass "Americans Want To Work Act Bill S3706" then be prepared for what is to come. Millions of people are litterally starving out there. They would rather discuss a bill for the children of illegal aliens? The money spent for this bill would go right back into the depressed economy. People need it to pay for medicine, food, shelter. There is a small percentage that abuse it, but let's be real, these are your neighbors that have worked all of their lives type folks now. Very very sad!

I created a wikipage entry for 99ers, if any wiki pros would like to add to or improve it using reliable sources and information, so historically this time in history is documented and remembered.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99ers

When I first submitted it, another person in a senior role with wikipedia messaged me asking if it was widespread enough of a term and said he would remove it if there were no sources on the term being used. So I went in and added multiple sources from ABC News to the Washington Post on the term being used. Apparently some people are completely unaware of what's going on in our world and haven't even heard about the 99ers. They didn't even know 1.4 million American families and growing are going through this.

    dear those who blame republicans,
I dont think a lot of you really understand why the republicans are trying to change this bill. As simple-minded democrats you assume that the "evil" GOP is doing their best to make sure you dont get extensions, but all they wanted to do was use the leftovers of the greatest financial failure in history, the stimulus fund. by using leftover money, which has already been budgeted, rather than borrowing another 34 billion dollars could possibly slow the chances of our eventual ecenomic collapse. so, before you start saying "vote out the republicans in november" think to yourself, "what have the democrats ever done for me?"

I was going over my resume this morning. 25 years in the construction industry, two college degrees. I am begging a staffing agency to find me work. I don't ask for more than what it takes to prevent eviction and my utilities from being shut off and it is nice to have food and gas and auto insurance. Republicans are full of stuffing when they claim that the unemployed choose to be lazy. I will gladly trade places with any one of our altruistic public servants.

    Keep Tier Five Alive.

We need to get a Tier 5 passed soon before things get any worst than they are. How can families survive. This is the worst thing I have ever been through in my 52 years. Must urge Obama, Senators and Congress for as long as it takes then to move on something.

The game is over anyways. Stopgap measures.
It will take something as basic as hunger to wake people up, & maybe even that won't.
