Unemployment Extension 2010: Jobless Checks and Claims Desired by Unemployed

Even Though HR4213 Passed, it Could Still Be Weeks Before Americans See Relief

The unemployment extension 2010 is important to all of the unemployed, but those in the states the most impacted by the current unemployment rate are among the ones who need it most. Sitting on her porch in rural Michigan, Emily (who's name has been changed to protect her identity) opens an envelope. Another bill. This time, it's for the emergency room visit for her baby, who was dehydrated at the time.

Although she has every intent of paying the bill, which is over $800, she can't. She and her husband were laid off from a small machine shop when orders from the automakers were no longer rolling in. The family of three can barely afford rent, and are living off of credit cards.

Both Emily and her husband rolled off of the second tier of benefits in mid June. The passage of the extension means that the two will have two more tiers of unemployment benefits before they are without a lifeline.

They were overjoyed when President Obama signed the measure in to law, but the joy was short lived. It could be weeks before checks start rolling out again.

Lucky for the family, their landlord has agreed to accept a promissory note. They have to pay half their rent each month, and then the balance when they start receiving their unemployment checks. Without this arrangement, the family would have to move into their old Safari van - hardly an atmosphere for a small child to live in.

CNN Money reports that it depends on the individual states when each individual will receive their lump sum retroactive payments. The reason is that with millions of unemployed, states will have to process applications and ensure that claims are valid before they can begin to mail payments once more.

For Michigan, you would think that this means that there will be a long wait to being receiving benefits once more. Not the case. A statement on the Michigan Unemployment Agency Web site indicates "We have teams of staff ready to process claims for the federal extensions and estimate that within two weeks, we should have most if not all federal unemployment benefit payments in the hands of those who are eligible for them."

Other states may not be so lucky. For those who are expecting unemployment extension checks to roll in, they could be up for a wait.

Yes, TN tells me that I have to wait for a letter....they've already made us wait 7 weeks; now it will be 2 or 3 more weeks. How does the federal government address this problem?

Finally was able to get hold of the main office of IDES in illinois and was told that if you have been certifying and updating your info you money will be released tonight or tomorrow morning whichs means it will be in your account either wed or thursday BUT THIS IS FOR ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE CONTINUED TO CERTIFY and for those of those who have not she said it can take up to 4 weeks because all the updated are done manually so to those in ILLINOIS RELIEF IS HERE IN A COUPLE DAYS THE LATEST.....

Sorry to hear that Leslie. I guess you will have to wait for the letter in the mail. Im doing the same thing, waiting for the mailman...but, in the meantime, I would be calling the UNEMPLOYMENT and talk to a LIVE person on what to do next. I know, their not the nicest people...I am looking into applying for a job with the state as an UNEMPLOYMENT REPRESENTATIVE!!! Ive learned alot dealing with all this BS!! And I would treat people a whole lot better, than the rude, obnoxious fools they have working!

  • Leslie7/25/2010

I called in every week, just didnt get to certify becasue of recorded message that said I had exhausted my benefits so the states that are getting their checks faster kept allowing people to certify while the others are making more work for themselves, costing more money etc becaues they have to back track and refile everyone tehy didnt allow to certify the past several weeks. Inconvenient and more work for the employees of the DOL and also we have to wait longer for checks..not because of anything WE did not do but because of something we were not ALLOWED to do.

  • Leslie7/25/2010

Like I said, I was not allowed to certify..I see in Georgia they were by looking at their website so their checks will be processed by the 30th..however Tennessee's doesn't say anything on their website now even though the other day it said we had to wait for a letter in the mail and it would be 3 or 4 weeks before checks would be processed..Tennessee stinks! The crappy thing is I live in Georgia just unfortunate enough to have worked in Tenneseee, Georgia pays more too!

Continue filing your weekly certification claim. If you have not, the unemployment will work with you. They will be sending informational letter with instructions on how to apply. Look for that in the mail…
