Unemployment Extension Bill 2010 - America's Jobless Benefits Bill Signed by Obama

Jobless Benefits Became Available when Obama Signed HR4213

The unemployment extension bill 2010 has been a big, controversial piece of legislation that has been hard to pass through congress. The extension bill allows people to file for jobless benefits for up to 99 weeks, providing that they live in certain states.

The legislation has been held up in the Senate since before the Memorial Day Holiday. Congress went on recess both for Memorial and Independence Day without passing the measure.

The resistance was with the GOP, who cited fears that deficit spending would ruin the economy for generations to come. The Democrats were first to point out that the Republicans started the deficit spending during the Bush Administration.

A filibuster was lifted on Tuesday, after Carte Goodwin was named interim Senator from West Virginia. The filibuster needed 60 votes to pass, and the Senate only had 59 yay votes before he was placed in the body.

On Wednesday, the bill was passed in the Senate with a vote of 59-39. The bill was then signed by Obama yesterday.

Many are excited that the legislation passed all the hurdles that it faced. After all, the extension was a much-needed lifeline for those who haven't been able to find work in this down economy.

However, there has been much confusion over the bill. Perhaps the mainstream media's lack of extensive coverage of this measure is to blame. However, the benefits extension bill doesn't include a few provisions that many people expected it to.

First, a $25 a week bonus that was added on during previous legislation was struck from this version of the bill. The Democrats needed to shave down the measure in order to get it to a size that the Republicans would stomach.

In addition, the COBRA subsidy - 65% of premiums - was done away with as well. This means that families have to pay 100% of their COBRA bill - if they want insurance. Many people can't afford the premiums even if they ARE working.

The measure also doesn't add a true "extension." Only the 1-4 tiers that were available previously are available now. There's no Tier 5 and there' s no availability of existing tiers for those previously ineligible.

Still, the measure needed to pass in order to pave the way for further extensions. Hopefully, Congress will see that this measure was good - but not enough to solve the problem.

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY COMMON SENSE DID NOT MAKE THEM INCLUDE 99ERS IN THE BILL?

HEY GOP’ERS…HERE IS A FREEBIE SINCE YOU ALL HAD ‘SOLUTIONS’ ON EXTENDING THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT WITHOUT RAISING THE DEBT, THEN WHY ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH WONT YOU SPEARHEAD LEGISLATION SO THAT THE 99ERS CAN BENEFIT FROM A PAID FOR EXTENSION?…..ahhhh TOO SIMPLE…

If it doesn't benefit the rich the rest of us can go hungry. I watched the debates and the republicans are all too old and set in their ways to deal with the problems our country faces. The Johns in AZ are a joke.

HEY WASHINGTON, WE ARE STILL UNEMPLOYED.the job ive worked for the last 24.6 years has faded into the abyss of that so many others have over the years.the people who come to this country just to take advantage of our outdated policy need to pay taxes when they get here and not be able to live here not paying taxes for however many years, then take our monies back to their home country and send their relatives to suck more of the life blood from this country.MAKE THEM PAY SO OUR PEOPLE DONT SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE DEFICIT THAT HAS BEEN CREATED BY POLITICS
