Unemployment Extension Bill Fails in the Senate. Now What?

What is Left for the Unemployed to Do Without Any Further Extension of Benefits?

J Budd, RN
"This is really scary. Without a Tier 5 my wife and I may have to soon move out of our apartment of 12 years and ... go where? I don't know," says Mike White, an unemployed American in California. White has been out of work since 2008 and despite sending out hundreds of resumes, has not even landed an interview.

White is one of the many of jobless Americans who are responding with shock and anger to the failure of an unemployment extension bill to get passed in the Senate last night. Even after 3 revisions and billions more dollars shaved off the bill, The Los Angeles Times reports that Senate Democrats were still unable to convince Senate Republicans to pass HR 4213.

No extension...no Tier V

Although HR 4213 would have only extended the deadline for qualifying for Emergency Unemployment Compensation Benefits (EUC), many unemployed who had already exhausted all their benefits and all four EUC extensions were hoping that eventually a Tier V EUC extension would be created. But without an extension of the current EUC four tiers, a Tier V is highly unlikely. As I reported in a previous article here on Associated Content, several lawmakers, including Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), had remarked that when all jobless Americans get their full unemployment benefits extensions (in many cases up to 99 weeks), then he would work with his colleagues on a Tier V.

But The Senate can't even pass a bill to extend the current four tiers of unemployment extension benefits to all jobless Americans.

What can be done now??

According to a June 16th 2010 article on Politio.com. Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI) vowed to withhold any war funding until this unemployment extensions bill passed. So far, Representative Obey has yet to comment on yesterday's vote in the Senate, so only time will tell if he and perhaps others will follow through with this threat.

Then there is President Obama's take on the jobless bill. According to the Los Angeles Times article, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said "The president has been clear: Americans should not fall victim to Republican obstruction at a time of great economic challenge for our nation's families." The article reports that President Obama will continue to push for this jobless bill. Some people like Ed Shultz of MSNBC-TV have publicly asked President Obama to use his power of Executive Order to help the unemployed. Whether or not President Obama can or intends to use this power remains to be seen.

And as for the unemployed, they will 'remember in November'

"I know one thing: If I am able I will do everything in my power in November to campaign against every single one of these Republican sonsofb****s!" says White.

OKAY! Democrats especially Republicans: Lend me your ears. If you have never been out of work for 2 years, unemployment exhausted, don't know how you are going to pay your rent, car, buy food, give your children the things that they need, you definately do no get it. Even in the health care, you can go right down the hall to your doctor while some people are dying. Stop worrying about your position because if you do the right thing we will keep you there. After helping the bank and these big coorporations think about a person okay, stop what you are doing and listen! Think about a person who does not have a job, who does not have savings, some people does not have a place to live. Please pass the tier 4 extension and the tier five for those who have been unemployed more than two years. Extend it for a year. The jobs are coming, yes, I believe we will bounce back, but for now let us keep our homes and feed our children. Most people are going back to school. Give them the cha

the only way to get at the republicans is to get a list of their corporate supporters and start boycotting them.and i mean forever.no one in washington cares about your phone calls or faxes.they only care about their own pocketbook.i will never forget those who have shunned us for the scars will last a lifetime.being portrayed as lazy welfare babies by those who have no idea what its like to eat bread(just bread)for dinner so your kids could eat right is offensive to the core.i don't want to tell a sob story because i know that it is shared by 100's of thousands of others.i have worked for 30 years in my field now i'm an outcast with little to no hope.
i read a post saying well how do you afford a computer or internet?well thank God for schools and libraries.there is going to be a breakdown in the fabric of our society.the gangs of new york will seem like sesame street compared to the uproar that the helpless and desperate will soon be forced to show.

  • Its both sides7/5/2010

Republicans are right on out of control spending. The dems are wrong in not agreeing to use already approved stimulus money to pay for more unemployement. They are all wrong if they think at anytime many people don't look for work if getting UI. Why this issue to argue deficit issues when so any others that waste billions. They give money to other countries. How about argue that first. Its all BS games and unemployed get hosed. Kick both sides out. They are both being stupid to hurt people. Use the damn stimulus money to help us. Take away only argument republicans have to not approving more. Both sides are acting like children. Both arguments to hold this up are stupid. Start cutting spending with money sent to other countries first.

mething that included no pork and is based on its own self as something that truly does some good for the American people.

  • DS7/2/2010

I do truly feel for you and everyone in your situation. Here is what you do. Contact the democrats and tell them to drop all of the pork they have added into the extensions benefits bill and the republicans will support it. If after all they pass it as is the government will take on even more debt and be even less able to continue helping you.

$4.6 billion to settle a long-running class-action lawsuit brought by black farmers against the Agriculture Department for discrimination is just one example of unneeded spending that is standing in the way of this being passed.

The House passed by a 417-1 vote a measure to reverse a 21 percent federal fee cut imposed last week on doctors providing care to seniors on Medicare. That measure was one of the most important contained in the now-dead catchall bill, but was broken out and passed separately by the Senate last week. This is an example of how the republicans will vote for something that included no pork and is based on its own self as so
