Unemployment Extension Bill HR4213: No Tier 5 Benefits Extension for 99ers

The Tier 5 Extension Could Be the Only Thing to Keep Americans Out of Poverty, so What Gives?

Meg G.
The unemployment extension bill, HR4213 became law when it was signed by Obama. The legislation provides a much needed extension of time to file for the existing tiers of unemployment benefits. This means that there are up to 99 weeks of unemployment available to those who lose jobs through no fault of their own.

There are plenty of Americans laid off or who were victims to corporate downsizing who have exhausted the four tiers of unemployment benefits available to them. Of course, this is assuming they were eligible for all four tiers to begin with; some states with low unemployment levels weren't eligible for Tiers 3 and 4 of the unemployment extension.

These individuals are called the "99ers." Having received almost two years of jobless benefits, these individuals still haven't been able to find work in this horrific job market.

The Washington Independent perhaps says it best, citing that the Tier 5 extension is "the most direct way to keep families and individuals out of poverty." They also point out that there are over 4 million 99ers in the US, and those numbers are growing each and every day.

Think about it- as people run out of benefits, it's as if they fall off a cliff. Either they are going to have to dip into their savings, or even their retirement accounts to survive.

Still, the hesitancy of Congress to pass the bill showcases that the quest for relief for the 99ers is going to be all but impossible. Sure, miracles can happen, but the Democrats couldn't even get the Republicans to agree to the extension of previously existing benefits, and that measure only cost $34 billion in deficit spending.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the near term to end the suffering for the 99ers and other long term unemployed. Everyone needs to join the fight if the legislation is going to even be brought up, as it's highly unlikely Washington will come up with the measure by themselves.

Anyone looking to hire and pay under the table?
Sometimes it's not the length of benefits, its the limits it puts on your life that are outrageous.
What's being completely ignored by the Government are the millions of people who have ALREADY dipped into or depleted their savings accounts to pay their bills or even maintain Child Support payments. Not highly publicized is the fact that UI recipients are penalized for taking part time work in an attempt to fill the gap left by UI "benefits". As an unemployed Texan I was shocked to learn that anything over $100.00 in part time wages will be deducted from my weekly UI benefits. This puts me in a pickle because I want a part time job to avoid reducing my Child support payments and still pay my rent but at part-time rates, I would end up with no time to actively seek full time work.
    Major flaw in the system

I went for a job interview and found out that the company sent out 4,000 invitations for the interview. We were told there were no job openings at this time but that there would be 2-4 in the next 6 months to one year.

The real reason that no one in the government is fighting for 99ers, is that if you aren't getting an unemployment check, you are no longer counted as an unemployed worker. So it makes it look like they are doing something. The 99ers are the largest group in need of aid, but if the largest group doesn't get a check, then their unemployed numbers go down, and they can pat themselves on the back, while you lose your homes.

Listen I do not want to be rude but the Unemployed done this to themselves! ALL Unemployed were laid off at different times in this economy. I see on different sites since 2009 ended that more newer unemployed people were coming on to the systems and I am sure before then. But since 2010 the new has been isolating themselves from ALL Unemployed in this recession! In a reccesion no matter when you were laid off your still one of the unemployed. If ALL Unemployed do not stand together even now with the new bill passing things will not change! Next week or the following week everything is going to look great because there are more exhausting total benefits than jobs in this economy! WE have been fighting for new weeks, Tier or Tiers for months for ALL Unemployed because we are all in the same boat. But Tier 5 was removed the most stupid move with the amount of exhausted unemployed individuals and more coming each day. If we ALL Unemployed do not get a new BILL started now it will not ha

Thanks Dems for doing nothing! Can't go out and blame the Republicans because THEY can pass whatever they want to. Dems have majority of both House and Senate and you cannot argue the facts.

Ron, that is unbelievable! What the hell??? Now they want you to have good credit after looking for two years? Corporate america need their asses kicked! I hope you find another one because that company was probably not where you would like to work in the long run anyway especially if they have a backward policy like that!
